The Basics

Established in 2003 by a recovering addict, Newfound Freedom offers structured sober living homes for men and women recovering from alcohol and drug dependency throughout Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Newfound Freedom operates multiple houses in the cities of Bristol and Levittown, each about a 45-minute drive from Philadelphia.

Accommodations and Amenities

Newfound Freedom currently operates 15 houses and there are plans to open more. The homes are comfortably furnished, located in residential neighborhoods and separated by gender and phase. Phase one is highly structured and new residents share a room with two to three other people. Phase two residents can opt to have a private room for $30 more per week.

Twin beds and bunk beds can be found in most of the bedrooms. A fully equipped kitchen with a washer and dryer are available in all of the homes. Newfound Freedom also provides cable, large flat screen TV’s and wireless Internet. Residents are allowed to use their cell phones and laptops. In addition, some houses have a pool and barbecue grill in the backyard for residents to enjoy.

Rules and Regulations

Newfound Freedom is 12-step focused and residents are required to have gone through detox or inpatient treatment prior to arrival. The first two weeks on phase one are considered the “blackout “period. Residents can only leave to go to AA/NA meetings, work, or to look for jobs if they are unemployed. Finding a sponsor, homegroup and meeting commitment as well as a job are necessary for moving out of the “blackout” period. Going to 30 meetings in 30 days is required for all residents.

Clients are in phase one until they have six months sober. All residents wake up at 8 am and weekday curfew is midnight and 2 am on weekends. Random alcohol and drug tests are a required part of the program. Clients are also responsible for keeping their areas clean and completing assigned household chores. Staff includes a house manager that is in recovery and Newfound Freedom also employs CADCs who are available for individual, group and family therapy.

Phase two occupants have a lot more freedom. They may come and go as they please as long as they continue paying their rent, completing chores and daily maintenance of sobriety. Residents in phase two do not have to attend 12-step meetings every day, although they must maintain a homegroup and a relationship with a sponsor. Clients pay per week with a one-time intake fee.

Extras

While the residents are responsible for their own exercise routines, the male houses provide weights for those interested. Musical instruments can also be found throughout the houses to encourage creativity and unity.

Newfound Freedom believes in encouraging their clients to learn how to have fun in recovery, so sober social events like barbecues, sporting events and outings to concerts are organized regularly.

In Summary

For men and women seeking a 12-step lifestyle, Newfound Freedom provides a large network of affordable, safe housing options. The emphasis on AA/NA will not appeal to everyone, nor will will the two-phase system that offers private rooms only to the senior house members. However, the fact that Newfound Freedom offers counseling with certified professionals sets it apart from other sober living homes. All in all, this is an encouraging environment for people to recover.
