The Basics

The sober living and outpatient programs through New Start Recovery of Orange County in Southern California are the ideal step-down from the detox and residential treatment it offers. The sober living facility is open to men only and incorporates an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and the 12 steps. Clients learn how to transition back into their communities and live in recovery.

Accommodations and Amenities

The sober living home for men is in the quiet town of Santa Ana, not too far inland from Huntington Beach, and offers comfort and support in a spacious and upscale house. Up to six clients share bedrooms (two per room) and common areas like a living room equipped with a large TV and wrap around couches; a dining room and fully stocked kitchen; and ample backyard space with a covered lounge area. There is also WiFi throughout the house and clients are able to use their personal devices along with a house desk computer if needed.

Residents attend meetings together off site, have group events and nights out, and enjoy a variety of social recreational and fitness activities. They are also welcome to be a part of the local gym, courtesy of New Start Recovery.

Rules and Regulations

Those in the IOP generally participate in treatment for up to 16 weeks, though the programming is individualized so that length can vary. Clients attend a regular schedule of off-site AA, NA or Celebrate Recovery meetings and attend group therapy several times a week. There are also individual sessions that are scheduled around the client’s convenience. Those who are living in the sober residence have an AA card that needs to be signed by someone at a community meeting. Clients also are expected to attend weekly house meetings and have some sort of job or be enrolled in school within a couple weeks  of moving in.

There are weekly, random drug screenings that every client has to agree to and curfews. The curfews are strict, but as the individual moves through their programming the times can be pushed back a bit. A house manager is always on site and is able to assist with any referrals or other resources that may be needed during a client’s stay. There can also be some help in figuring out transportation issues, doctors visits, and getting set up with some work training.

The IOP is staffed with Master’s-level clinicians and medical professionals who are CADC, psychiatrist and LMFT.

Extras

The alumni program offers counseling follow up, relapse prevention and sober companions services for social events that may result in a relapse like a wedding or business event. There is a fellowship that is focused on fitness and assistance in housing placement or finding sober roommates for graduates.

The family program consists of group therapy twice a month.

In Summary

New Start Recovery IOP and sober living programs are very supportive and structured, picking up where the inpatient treatment leaves off. The IOP offers evidence-based care with an emphasis on accountability as a way to help clients transition successfully back into their communities and lives smoothly. New Start Recovery is a valuable asset to the communities it serves.
