New PrioritiesThe Basics

Located in Redmond, Oregon, New Priorities Family Services offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and regular outpatient treatment with dual diagnosis support. This nonprofit facility accepts adults, adolescents, seniors and families.

Treatment and Staff

The NPFS treatment program is rooted in evidence-based practices. Though it is not 12-step oriented, the staff does recommend that clients attend self-help groups off-site. There is a wide range of therapeutic modalities available including family systems therapy, child therapy, art therapy, EMDR, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MCBT), relational therapy, sand play and solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT). Counselors and the on staff-therapist have experience working with at-risk youth and clients who have co-occurring disorders.

Treatment is provided through individual, group, family and couples counseling. Services also include relapse prevention, case management, DUI educational classes, aftercare and educational groups for families that focus on parenting skills.

Upon intake, staff complete health assessments and drug and alcohol evaluations for new clients, while families undergo assessments as a unit. If there are documented reasons why more intensive care than IOP or outpatient treatment could be needed, staff may recommend inpatient treatment and refer clients out to another facility. Counselors help develop individualized treatment plans to guide the level of care for each client.

Staff recommend standard outpatient treatment for those who are parents or have jobs to maintain. At this level, clients attend individual and group counseling once or twice a week for three to six months, though this can vary. IOP requires a minimum of nine hours of therapeutic contact per week, with typical stays lasting 12 weeks. Each individual and group session is 60- to 90-minutes long, while educational groups last for 30 minutes to an hour. Groups sizes can varyl, though they tend to be small, with five or so clients each. Clients’ children, provided they are between ages six and 18, are welcome to join IOP group sessions during the 12 weeks.

There are 15 staff members altogether, including LPCs, two Master’s-level counselors, a therapist, an LPN and CADCs. The Master’s-level counselors specialize in family counseling and both have over 20 years of experience.

Extras

Once a client completes a program, they are welcome to return to the facility periodically as part of an informal aftercare program. NPFS also offers the “Addictions 101” group for adolescents ages 14 to 19, which lasts for six weeks. Topics covered include family relationships and the physical and psychological effects of drugs and alcohol. The philosophy at NPFS is to intervene for at-risk youth before they get into legal trouble.

In Summary

New Families Priority Services addresses substance abuse and co-occurring disorders with an extensive and creative approach to treatment. This facility is a great choice for young people showing early signs of substance abuse. The staff incorporate families into each client’s treatment, especially children and adolescents who can be helped with early intervention.
