inexpensive rehabs in Ohkay Owingeh, NMNew Moon Lodge Review

Operating out of Ohkay Owingeh, New Mexico, New Moon Lodge is the residential counterpart to Circle of Life, an outpatient substance abuse treatment facility with programs tailored specifically for the Eight Northern Indian Pueblos Council, Inc. (ENIPC). Treatment consists of holistic Native American techniques mixed with contemporary evidence-based practices.

Accommodations and Food

The main residence is a 14-bed facility for men who share double-occupancy rooms with one other client. The house also features a work-out room and full kitchen. There is also a farm-based residence with turkeys, rabbits and chickens that clients help take care of. They can also learn to grow food based on Native traditions in the on-property gardens. The campus also has a cafeteria where clients eat three meals a day prepared by a chef.

While New Moon Lodge is tailored for adults, the organization does have a nearby co-ed residence for teens called Butterfly Healing Center, which can accommodate 15 boys and 10 girls. Though the adolescent facility is not a farm setting, treatment still emphasizes connecting with nature for reflection and healing.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment is generally based on the Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) Model, which stresses family involvement in the recovery process. Though individual plans can vary, days often consist of relapse prevention groups as well as group and individual therapy using CBTEMDR and art therapy as needed. As mentioned, a portion of each day is set aside to care for the animals and tend to the gardens.

Though treatment at Butterfly Healing Center uses many of the same modalities, the program is geared more towards the developmental needs of high-risk teens and their families. It emphasizes personal empowerment through supportive individual therapy, with Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques used to build confidence.

The staff at both programs consists of LADCs, Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors (LPCCs), Licensed Independent Social Workers (LISWs) and Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHCs).

Extras

Family therapy is available in both programs and can be ongoing. New Moon Lodge also has several related outpatient programs for adults and adolescents, offered through Circle of Life.

In Summary

Overall, New Moon Lodge and its corresponding adolescent facility, Butterfly Healing Center, offer a unique approach to substance abuse treatment through a combination of traditional 12-step philosophies and Native American perspectives and values. Though treatment is tailored specific to the unique needs of the Tribal community, it does offer well-rounded care on a foundation of spirituality that clients are familiar with—making it a great option for those who qualify.
