The Basics
The merger of New Light Consultants, Inc. and New Light Child and Family Institute is now known simply as New Light, a non-profit behavioral health organization that has served its community since 1998. With facilities in Millington and Caro, Michigan, the organization’s main focus is to provide treatment and assistance to children and families in the foster care system, which includes outpatient substance abuse recovery and mental health care.
Treatment and Staff
Clients undergo an initial intake and assessment allowing staff members to develop an individualized treatment plan based on their unique recovery needs. Clients suffering from addiction and co-occurring disorders are treated through the New Light Consultants branch and participate in individual and group therapy as well as 12-step integration. All treatment uses evidence-based practices, though specific modalities vary depending on the client and their needs. The program also offers support for sexual, physical and emotional abuse, as well as depression, anxiety and other family-related issues. Group topics include relapse prevention strategies and educational sessions about addiction as a disease.
Staff consists of clinical psychologists, LBSWs, LMSWs and additional Master’s-level clinicians.
Extras
Additional services include prevention and early intervention programs—like the STOP program for adults and adolescents that is 10 weeks-long and consists of group sessions dedicated to exploring the risks and potential effects of substance abuse. The FIGHT program is also 10 weeks in duration and is designed for youth and families. It is a home-based program meeting three times a week, eventually tapering down to once a week. FIGHT treats substance abuse and mental health disorders with emphasis on family integration. DWI/DUI assessments are also available.
New Light Child and Family Institute also offers foster care and adoption support, family reunification counseling and the 12-week EMBRACE program that teaches healthy parenting skills.
In Summary
Overall, New Light is a well-rounded organization that offers outpatient treatment for clients of all ages. While many of the facility’s services are focused on family-related issues, individuals seeking flexible outpatient therapy for addiction and co-occurring disorders are also welcome to attend. While those in need of more intensive treatment may need to look elsewhere, New Light remains an affordable option worth considering for those in the area.
