San Pedro CaliforniaThe Basics

Founded in 1985 in San Pedro, California, by Perry Pettacia, New Life House was originally established as a sober living home to help men remain clean and sober. Pettacia, who was a recovering alcoholic, found sobriety through AA and wanted to be of service to fellow alcoholics and addicts. In 1987, New Life House relocated to Torrance, and by 1994, Pettacia opened a second home in Los Angeles, and created age-specific homes. After Pettacia passed away in 2006, his protégé Mike Joly took over and opened a third house. New Life House accommodates men between the ages of 18 and 32.

Accommodations and Amenities

New Life House South Bay has two homes that lodge young men between the ages of 18 and 22, while New Life House LA caters for men between the ages of 23 and 32 years of age. New Life House has an 86-bed capacity between the three homes. Residents live in immaculate residences, all situated in nice neighborhoods. Furnishings are contemporary and tastefully arranged. Accommodations vary but clients are typically lodged in age-specific fully furnished rooms.

The houses are stocked with food, and three meals are provided daily. A typical breakfast includes French toast, sausage and eggs. A recent dinner included chicken and pasta. Amenities at New Life House South Bay East include a fitness area, study room, gazebo and a billiards lounge. At New Life House South Bay West, men live in a ranch-style house that includes an exercise area, foosball, pool table and media room with a TV that has movie and sport channels. Clients are granted a $75 weekly allowance for personal use. New Life House has two house managers per residence.

Rules and Regulations

Prior to admission, clients undergo a 45-minute phone assessment to ensure that New Life House is a good fit. Staff asks questions to determine the appropriate level of care. A minimum 90-day length of stay is required, but the average length of stay is between 12 and 18 months.

Upon arrival, clients typically enroll in outpatient care, and are required to participate in a comprehensive 12-step protocol. Requirements include attendance at daily 12-step meetings, participation at the house meeting and performance of household chores. There are no set curfews since all clients are supervised or in a group when leaving their house. Local transportation to meetings is provided by New Life House graduates. Other services include life skills training, psychiatric referrals, money management, employment assistance, meditation and college enrollment support.

At New Life House, there is continuous peer collaboration, which is kept on a constructive level. Clients are taught how to identify and work on their character defects. Typically, after 90 days, clients look for work, enroll in school or participate in community service. Random drug and alcohol testing is conducted to ensure the safety of the entire household. A weekly parent program offers house meetings for moms and dads. The meetings include substance abuse education and discuss the process of healing from chemical dependency.

Typically, clients graduate in groups of three, and usually move as a group into a local house or apartment. While living in close proximity to New Life House, they go back for extra support, plus assist newcomers.

Extras

Clients participate in many recreational activities including snowboarding, surfing and hiking at Runyon Canyon or in the Hollywood Hills.

In Summary

In 2013, New Life House had an 80 percent success rate of graduates who were still clean and sober after five years. Clients are kept busy, and are hardly left to their own devices. Those who want to veer out into the world, after gaining a good foothold in recovery, will find that New Life House will give them the tools that they need.
