New Leaf Sober HouseThe Basics

New Leaf Sober House is a group of sober living spaces for men in South Florida. New Leaf is relatively new to Fort Lauderdale’s expansive sober living community, having been established in 2013. There are three separate locations—two homes in Fort Lauderdale and one further north, in Pompano Beach. The owner checks in with clients by phone and visits locations on a regular basis. On-site “house dads” are available to assist and supervise clients and a senior house manager oversees the operations of all three properties.

Accommodations and Amenities

The first of New Leaf’s Fort Lauderdale locations is a one-story duplex with three bedrooms and two bathrooms on either side of the facility. The duplex has a roomy common area furnished with comfortable couches and a TV. It accommodates 12 clients who sleep two to a room in twin beds. The second house is a smaller residence—a two bedroom home that can accommodate three men. The house has a classic kitchen and breakfast nook for dining. The two houses are next to each other. The smaller Fort Lauderdale home and the Pompano house are ranch-style homes with basic furnishings, common spaces and full kitchens. The Pompano house has just one bedroom where three clients live—the bedroom is exceptionally large. This location came about from clients’ need for a slightly cheaper rent at $155 a week. Each location provides free laundry, cable and Wi-Fi. New Leaf houses are all located close to bus routes. The Fort Lauderdale locations are two blocks away from the bus stop and one and a half miles from an AA clubhouse.

Rules and Regulations

Clients are required to participate in 12-step recovery while living at New Leaf. They must attend at least three AA/NA meetings per week, get a sponsor and find a home group nearby. The staff administers random drug tests two to three times a week. One house manager oversees day to day operations at all three properties. Clients must wash dishes, make beds and maintain the general cleanliness of their house. The house manager checks on clients regularly to see that they are keeping their rooms clean as well as common areas. For the first 30 days, curfew is 10 pm on weeknights and 11 pm on the weekends. After 30 days, curfew is 11 pm on weeknights and 12 am on weekends. After 60 days, curfew is 12 am on weeknights and one am on weekends. Clients are eligible for two overnight passes a month with 48-hour notice to house manager.

In Summary

New Leaf Sober House runs a friendly, relaxed group of homes. As long as clients follow the prescribed house rules, they are given a long leash. This is a great fit for men on a budget who are ready to take responsibility for their recovery. They will get the flexibility to live their lives independently, but the structure and support offered by a group of men who share the common goal of staying clean and sober.
