New Jersey Teen Challenge Review
The New Jersey Teen Challenge campus was established in 2007 and is part of Teen Challenge of New England organization. This is a men’s only facility that provides drug and alcohol treatment that imparts Christian values and faith based programming. This residential treatment is available to men who are 18 and older, and is located in Clinton Township.
Accommodations and Food
The New Jersey facility was a gift to the ministry of Teen Challenge, and in 2014 the facility transferred from its Newark location to the 88 acres in Clinton Township. There are 22 buildings at this site that include renovated cabins with remodeled bathrooms, a large dining hall and administrative building that is home to offices, classroom and meeting spaces. There is also a chapel where the clients can participate in daily worship. The sprawling campus includes a covered area with picnic tables, basketball court and event hall where fundraisers and graduation ceremonies take place.
The cabins where the clients sleep during their 15 month stay is furnished with bunk beds and bathrooms with multiple stalls and sinks closets, and each client has a dresser and closet space. As with all of the Teen Challenge programs food and provided mainly by donation. Three meals a day are prepared and served on site by a qualified staff member that is balanced and nutritious.
Treatment and Staff
Though the incoming clients aren’t required to be a Christian prior to beginning treatment there is an expectation to have an open mind and be prepared to participate in church services, of which there are many daily. The programs are viewed as holistic and not clinical, but are designed to provide the clients with an alternative way of thinking and behaving. There are a number of phases clients have to experience that encompass the behavior modification method that focuses on educating the client on the values in Christianity. There are several group meetings that involve prayer, bible study and community outreach incorporated into treatment.
The program emphasizes building back self-esteem and discovering the root of where the addiction started. The idea behind this is that once the client embraces the past they can start to move towards the future without guilt or anger. The clients participate in the fundraising efforts of the facility as well as volunteering at various charities in the community and schools.
A majority of the staff lives at the facility and are former clients of the program. There are no counselors that have formal accreditations in addiction, but have experience working and counseling within a spiritual or church environment.
Extras
There are frequent social activities on the grounds that are ideal for family visitation including softball games and barbecues.

All the Teen Challenge programs, no matter where they are in the country, encourage the same degree of accountability in clients, which then makes it possible to change.
