New InsightsThe Basics

New Insights is a substance abuse treatment program located in Central Pennsylvania. It has been in operation since 1986, providing a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and outpatient and services to clients. There are two facilities—in York and Lemoyne. The founder and Executive Director of New Insights, John Maxton, is a professional in the drug abuse treatment field, with over 25 years of experience. He was the first to bring IOP treatment to Central Pennsylvania. He subsequently co-founded the Pennsylvania Intensive Outpatient Providers Association and was appointed chairman of the Pennsylvania Placement Criteria special committee for IOP and outpatient services by Pennsylvania’s Bureau of Drug and Alcohol Programs.

Treatment and Staff

New Insights doesn’t provide detox or dual-diagnosis support, but referrals can be provided. Treatment begins with a client evaluation where counselors determine a course of treatment. Clients participate in a 12-step based program where they are required to attend AA/NA recovery meetings weekly, off-site. Individual, group and family counseling are all offered. In addition to learning about addiction in New Insights’ educational courses, primarily the effects of drugs and alcohol on the body and mind.

The Lemoyne facility offers outpatient services and PHP for adult males in a home-like setting. This program, more commonly referred to as the “Work While in Rehab” program, lasts between 30 days to 45 days. Some clients, despite the name, opt to not work while in the program. That said, treatment is four hours a day, five evenings a week and organized to accommodate clients’ work and outside obligations. It is meant for clients transitioning back into their professional and home lives after an inpatient program. There may be up to 20 individuals in PHP at a given time.

The Lemoyne and York facilities both offer IOP, which last for six weeks. Clients in IOP attend group therapy for three and a half hour sessions three times a week and individual therapy once per week. After IOP, many people step down to regular outpatient and participate at this level anywhere between three to six months, continuing to participate in group therapy, but only once a week. At the Lemoyne facility, New Insights offers a gender-specific group for women only. This program’s curriculum is also 12-step based, but women also learn about self-care practices, clear communication strategies and how to set healthy boundaries.

There is also a Relapse Prevention Program intended for clients who are brand new to sobriety and especially for those who struggle with chronic relapse. The program teaches clients what constitutes a high-risk scenario and how to identify and handle triggers.  This program relies heavily on the 12-step model.

New Insights has a full-time staff of nine, the better part of whom work at the bigger Lemoyne office. The staff includes a supervising psychologist and CDACs.

Extras

Clients have access to alternative therapies including yoga, journaling, nutritional education and stress management education courses.

The family program is an unofficial part of the Rehab While at Work program. Sundays are family days where clients spend time with family and participate in group sessions. Staff work with clients’ families and spouses to promote positive communication, education on addiction and its effects on the family. Counselors help clients find healthy ways to bolster their recovery.

Clients with DUIs/DWIs have access to short-term programs at New Insights that are focused on education. LPCs take clients through the evaluation process then submit the results to the court system.

New Insights has three recovery houses for adult clients on Market Street in Lemoyne. Clients pay $120 dollars for the whole month, including utilities and cable. The only requirements before move-in are a commitment to abstinence from drugs and alcohol as well as having at least 30 days sober.

In Summary

New Insights, has a small staff with experts at the helm of both facilities. Clients who do not have the opportunity to complete an inpatient program may opt for PHP, continuing to meet obligations at work and at home without being uprooted. These facilities have been in operation for nearly 30 years, providing a traditional, 12-step based recovery program.
