New HorizonsThe Basics

New Horizons Living Centers offers affordable transitional housing, as well as outpatient services for adults in recovery from chemical dependency, as well as for those with mental and physical disabilities. Their facilities are located in Bristol and Torrington, Connecticut. Due to high demand and their affordable cost, prospective clients are usually placed on a one to three month waiting list.

Accommodations and Amenities

The gender-specific sober living houses accommodate between six and eight clients each. The female-only house provides single fully furnished rooms, while the male-only house offers both single and double-occupancy furnished rooms. Amenities include cable TV, Wi-Fi a house phone and a free on-site washer and dryer. House managers reside on the premises. There is plenty of parking for those who have cars, but the homes are both within walking distance from public transportation and local 12-step meetings.

Residents purchase their own groceries, and prepare their meals in fully equipped kitchens. Combining resources and sharing meals family-style is encouraged.

Rules and Regulations

New Horizons Living Centers requires a six-month minimum length of stay. They maintain a zero tolerance policy for drinking or using. Clients undergo random drug urine screenings, as well as breathalyzers. Those who refuse or test positive will be subject to immediate eviction.

Weekly requirements include attending five 12-step meetings, obtaining and working with a sponsor, performing all assigned household chores and being present at the in-house meeting. Clients must be employed or actively searching for work. Job searches must be verified in writing. Smoking is forbidden inside the building, and those smoking outside must not litter the premises with their cigarette butts.

The curfew for both men and women is 11 pm on weekdays and midnight on weekends. Guests must leave at least three hours before curfew. Residents are responsible for keeping their rooms tidy, cleaning up after meals, as well as maintaining the spotlessness of the kitchen. The 30-day cost is $650 for a double-occupancy room, and $750 for a single. The move-in cost includes first and last month’s rent, a security and sobriety deposit. A five-dollar weekly fee, in addition to the rent is paid towards cleaning supplies. New Horizons Living Centers imposes a five-dollar penalty fee in certain situations including being a no-show at the in-house meeting and not doing assigned weekly household chores.

At New Horizons Living Centers, clients requiring treatment services are offered faith-based outpatient counseling by certified pastoral counselors at New Horizons Counseling Centers. The individual sessions are scheduled according to the client’s needs.

Extras

New Horizons Living Centers holds an annual summer picnic at the Four Town Fair in Somers, Connecticut.

In Summary

New Horizons Living Centers is pretty popular, because of their low cost and strong desire to help newly clean clients get back on the right track. However, their faith-based counseling services might not be for everyone, and even though the outpatient treatment is not mandated, there might be religious vibes. However, those seeking a basic, affordable sober living that offers the option of single rooms may find this a great fit.
