NHCCThe Basics

New Horizon Counseling Center (NHCC) is a nonprofit agency that serves the New York City boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn and neighboring Nassau County. Dr. Isaac Bechor founded NHCC in 1981 in response to significant budget cuts in state-run mental health services. He opened the first clinic in Ozone Park, focusing on treatment for indigents struggling with mental illness. NHCC now operates several outpatient clinics that focus on mental health treatment for adults, adolescents and children. The chemical dependency, outpatient-only clinic is located in Valley Stream on Long Island.

Treatment and Staff

Chemical dependency clients are required to detox before admission. If necessary, staff can arrange for referrals to detox programs. Once sober, clients have an initial assessment and psychiatric evaluation before beginning treatment. For clients with co-occurring disorders, staff develop an individualized treatment plan to address specific issues.

NHCC requires clients to attend group and individual counseling. The type and length of treatment depends on the client’s evaluation and individual need. Clients who are mandated by the courts to participate in treatment for DWI/DUI offenses typically stay four to six months.

New Horizon Counseling Center does not have a 12-step based program. Group therapy for adults is focused on building self-esteem, setting goals, learning how to socialize sober, relapse prevention and conflict resolution. Adolescents discuss experimentation with drugs and alcohol in group. All clients have access to Spanish-speaking staff, medication management, dual diagnosis support, Suboxone, anger management groups, individual counseling and couples and family therapy. There are support groups for concerned parents; family are involved heavily in the adolescent program for girls and boys aged 13 to 18. There is also a group for young adults aged 18 to 23. Outpatient clients must attend a minimum of two group counseling sessions a week and one individual counseling session a month.

This outpatient clinic is a small-scale enterprise. Staff consists of a psychiatrist, a nurse practitioner and various counselors who lead groups as well as individual sessions with clients. All counselors are LCSWs who also handle case management.

Extras

The NHCC outpatient clinics for mental health provide initial assessments, art therapy, play therapy, behavior modification, psychiatric evaluations, medication management and medication therapy. There are early intervention services available for children and adolescents.

In Summary

New Horizon Counseling Center offers a wide range of outpatient services throughout the greater New York metropolitan area, but their chemical dependency outpatient facility is a smaller operation. Program staff emphasize growth through behavioral changes as opposed to a more traditional 12-step based curriculum. This program is a good choice for clients in the Valley Stream area who are looking to get sober in a an affordable therapeutic environment.
