Accommodations and Food
Situated on Cape Breton Island in the town of Sydney, there are two separate housing units for men and women through New Horizon Addiction Rehab. The men’s facility offers 12 beds, while the women’s has six beds. They are home-like residences with private bedrooms and attached bathrooms.
Clients are responsible for keeping their personal spaces and common areas tidy, and completing daily chores. The homes are very elegantly decorated and comfortable with sitting rooms, dining rooms, kitchens and lounge spaces. Each facility also has a washer and dryer, and a gym on site.
Nutrition is a cornerstone of this program. New Horizon Addiction Rehab serves healthy, balanced meals three times a day. They set out snacks regularly too.
Treatment and Staff
The treatment program at New Horizon Addiction Rehab runs seven days a week. It includes a daily structure of group and individual therapy, process groups and AA/NA meetings. A typical day begins with an early morning wake-up, house meeting and goal setting. Then clients go to one of several weekly groups. Group sessions address self-esteem, coping skills, relapse prevention and mindfulness. New Horizon Addiction Rehab designs programming to last about six weeks, though there are options for extended stays.
Incoming clientele have a thorough physical and mental health assessment upon arrival. From there, the team implements a treatment plan. The staff presents clients struggling with opioid addiction different treatment options. There is Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) that uses Suboxone or Methadone. Or there is a track that doesn’t use any medication after acute detox and stabilization. In addition, the team can facilitate medication management for dual diagnosis clients.
New Horizon Addiction Rehab employs LPNs, RNs, medical doctors and Master’s-level therapists.

This program works closely with the clients’ family members to coordinate care from the onset of treatment.
Additionally, New Horizon Addiction Rehab offers culturally sensitive treatment options to Canada’s First Nations people. It is open to the First National Healing Principles and Practices.
