New FoundationsThe Basics

New Foundations Transitional Living started as a five-bed sober living house in 2010 and has flourished, becoming the largest transitional living organization in the greater Cincinnati area. This sober community has a 115-bed capacity in eight sober living houses—seven in Cincinnati, Ohio and one just over the border in Kentucky. New Foundations’ program is based in the 12-steps and their mission is providing men and women a spiritual recovery environment.

Accommodations and Amenities

New Foundations Transitional Living provides gender-specific single-family houses that range between two and five bedrooms and accommodate between 12 and 15 people. Generally, between two and three clients share each fully-furnished room, sleeping on twin-sized beds and sharing dresser and closet space. Amenities include high speed Internet including Wi-Fi, cable TV, laundry facilities and desktop computers. Each residence has a live-in house manager and assistant manager.

The kitchens are equipped with appliances, dishes and utensils. Residents are responsible for supplying their own linens, personal hygiene items and food.

Rules and Regulations

Potential residents are required to have gone through inpatient treatment and/or complete detox and be medically stable in order to be admitted into the facility. Sex offenders, arsonists, or those who have current arrest (felony or misdemeanor) warrants aren’t permitted. Clients complete a written application process followed by an interview. Additionally, a urine sample must be provided and test clean. Upon admittance, clients have their personal belongings searched. Length of stay depends on the resident. Some clients stay a few months, while others reside at New Foundations Transitional Living for a few years.

New Foundations Transitional Living is deeply rooted in the steps, and residents must attend a minimum of four AA/NA meetings per week. Working the steps with a sponsor and thereby learning life skills according to the 12-steps is another requirement. Clients must also be willing to pursue full-time employment, be employed or enroll in school full-time.

All residents are subject to random drug and alcohol testing. The facility has a zero tolerance rule towards testing positive. Such individuals are immediately evicted from the premises. Also, clients must be watchful of each other, and report to a house manager if they suspect that one of their housemates is under the influence. Residents who don’t inform on their housemates are also subject to being immediately dismissed. The curfew is at 11:30 pm Sundays through Thursdays and at 1:30 am on Fridays and Saturdays.

Extras

In 2014, the City of Cincinnati wanted to close down New Foundations Transitional Living, saying that it violated zoning laws by housing more than four residents in a single-family house. According to Channel 9 WCPO Cincinnati, the issue was resolved in October 2014. New Foundations Transitional Living was allowed to continue current operations, but expansion plans were cut.

In Summary

New Foundations Transitional Living is an affordable option for those seeking sober living and a chance to work the steps. They accept people who are recently out of detox, but they do not provide medical or psychological care. Clients seeking such care might consider looking elsewhere for a place to build their new foundation.
