The New Foundation Review
The New Foundation (TNF) is a non-profit organization in Scottsdale, Arizona, that reaches at-risk youth by intervening for substance abuse, behavioral and mental health issues in clients’ formative years. Though TNF began as a facility open to anyone in need of substance abuse treatment, the focus of care shifted to adolescent clients between the ages of 11 and 17 in 1973. The residential treatment, Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), outpatient curriculum and in-home treatment at TNF follow a continuum of care, or step down model of treatment, for clients and their families. The TNF continuum of care provides assistance for clients with co-occurring disorders.
Accommodations and Food
The first and highest level of care at TNF is the residential treatment program. Clients remain for a minimum of 30 days. They are then are re-assessed by counselors to determine if more treatment is needed. To accommodate the clients in this program, there are modified apartments on the property. Each apartment has two beds, two baths, a living room, a sitting room, couches and a dining room. There are a total of 48 beds on the three-acre campus and male and female clients are housed in separate wings.
Staff prepare meals and clients convene at a large cafeteria for mealtime. The meals are nutritionally sound, as are the snacks that are provided throughout the day.
Treatment and Staff
The residential treatment programs are categorized by levels one and two. The main 30-day treatment program is known as the Intensive Therapeutic Intervention (ITI) program. This program provides 24-hour supervision to clients who may be a danger to themselves or to others. Master’s-level therapists give clients assessments with their families present, then determine an individualized treatment plan moving forward.
Staff use art therapy, pet therapy and recreational activities to balance treatment for young clients. Clients attend group therapy four to five days a week. Level two for residential treatment is for youth considered to be less of a risk of harm to themselves or others. The atmosphere is not as strict and the idea is for clients to earn more freedom and apply what they learned in level one.
PHP meets 7:30 am to 4:30 pm five days a week, for those who still need intensive treatment but want to be able to go home to their families each night. Two additional outpatient programs available and clients can even graduate to outpatient after finishing level one of inpatient. Esperanza provides mental health treatment for clients, while Phoenix Rising provides substance abuse treatment for clients. Hours during the school year are 2:30 pm to 7:30 pm and during the summer 11 am to 5 pm. All treatment programs incorporate CBT, DBT, trauma informed techniques Motivational Interviewing (MI) and the 12-step model. Clients are required to attend individual and family therapy sessions, along with a minimum of three 12-step groups.
The staff of TNF is led by a medical doctor and a team of Master’s-level therapists, including MFTs, LCSWs and CADCs.
Extras
Clients continue their education while attending treatment at TNF. The Marion Burton School is located on campus, catering to the education for clients in grades six through 12.
TNF also offers at home services for young people aged three to 17. This programming is broken down as Respite Program, Behavioral Coaching & Daily Living Skills and In Home Family Support. The Respite Programs serves as a buffer system between a child with problematic behavior and his or her immediate family. Often in combination with the Respite Program, Behavioral Coaching & Daily Living Skills has brings a behavioral health specialist into the home to work with the child directly in order to develop, according to the TNF site, “critical basic skills such as effective communication, managing emotions, accepting direction and the proper use of time-outs.” In Home Family Support is where a TNF staff members creates a treatment plan incorporating the entire family.

The New Foundation truly lives up to its name. Adolescent clients receive treatment in a safe environment where their education is also prioritized with the help of staff and the on-site, accredited educational facility.
