New Farm Clinic Review

Located in New Farm, Australia, New Farm Clinic is a private mental health clinic and a subsidiary of Ramsay Health Care, an Australian healthcare conglomerate operating a number of private hospitals throughout the country. More specifically, New Farm Clinic offers treatment for a wide range of behavioral health issues with a focus on eating disorders and mood disorders. In addition to its more flexible outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), New Farm Clinic also provides comprehensive inpatient care as well.

Accommodations and Food

As a result of recent multi-million dollar renovations, New Farm Clinic has expanded its facilities and now boasts a total of 128 beds, all in private rooms. The clinic is set up dormitory-style and each room includes a full bed, a desk, storage space and basic decor. In addition to the bedrooms, the facility also includes therapy rooms, common areas, outdoor walking paths, patios, a gymnasium and a pond. Throughout their stay, all residents are served three meals a day plus snacks in the facility’s on-site cafeteria.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning treatment, all residents go through an initial intake and assessment process to help staff members determine their needs and their medical history. As a fully-equipped medical facility, those in need of detox or stabilization can do so on-site before therapy begins. Although all programs are individualized, residents typically attend full days of care which include individual, group and family therapy rooted in evidence-based treatment practices like CBT, DBT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and psychoeducation.

Specific care tracks are available for different mental health needs, though in each plan days typically run from 6:30 am to 10 pm at night with breaks for meals and free time throughout. Extensive dual diagnosis support and medication management services are available, even for severe mental illnesses like bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. In addition to therapy, clients also attend nutritional education and supervised meals. Groups cover many topics including self-esteem, life skills, relapse prevention, trigger identification and social skills. In more severe cases, clients may also need feeding tubes to help get their weight up to a healthy level. While 12-step participation is not required in these programs, it may be encouraged in some cases.

The staff at New Farm Clinic is wide-ranging and includes psychiatrists, doctors, RNs, psychologists, dietitians, case managers and additional Master’s and PhD-level clinicians.

Extras

The organization also offers Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), two non-invasive procedures which may be used to treat certain mood disorders. Specific counseling plans are available to the elderly along with a bevy of community outreach resources. Additional medical or psychiatric help is also available on-site as necessary. Those who complete primary care can also work with staff members to develop stepped down aftercare or wraparound services (which may include outpatient or IOP at the clinic).

In Summary

In all, New Farm Clinic provides comprehensive medical and psychiatric support for those struggling with eating disorders and related mental illnesses. Treatment plans are evidence-based and include input from a multidisciplinary team of doctors, psychiatrists, dietitians and counselors. Dual diagnosis support and medication management are also provided, all in a recently renovated, top-of-the-line facility. While the cost of treatment may vary by insurance and program specifics, New Farm Clinic’s residential programs are a strong resource for clients struggling with eating disorders.
