The Basics
New Directions of Central Florida is a substance abuse treatment program for men and women in Summerfield, Florida, about an hour north of Orlando. Its treatment model includes structured outpatient therapy in conjunction with gender-specific sober living.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment begins with an initial assessment so that an individualized plan, including duration of care, can be developed. Therapy employs evidence-based practices like CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Ambulatory detox is provided for clients suffering from withdrawal symptoms. Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) with Suboxone is used and clients are medically supervised in an outpatient setting. Specialized sessions geared towards dual diagnosis support are also provided. Clients are encouraged to attend 12-step meetings as some of the principles are incorporated into treatment.
The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) typically entails 10 to 12 hours a week of treatment. Clients attend three group sessions, Monday through Friday, lasting three to four hours each. Sessions are offered in the evening to accommodate clients’ work or school schedules.
The team at New Directions of Central Florida consists of a MD who oversees MAT as well as LCSWs and support staff.
Extras
Aftercare consisting of monthly alumni groups is also offered. A family program meets the first Friday of each month for a multi-family group session.
Clients have the option to live in one of three gender-specific residences during treatment: two houses for men and one for women. Clients are paired in double occupancy rooms with basic furnishings, including twin beds, dressers and closets. All bedrooms are equipped with air conditioners and Cable TV. Each house has a full kitchen and while clients are responsible for their own groceries, there is a pantry that is stocked with basic items. Amenities include exercise equipment, a washer and dryer, Wi-Fi, computers, telephone landlines with free long distance, movie channels and utilities. Transportation is also provided to and from the treatment facility.
