New Directions For Change

The Basics

New Directions For Change was founded in 2011 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Arland Fanning, a counselor who has personally struggled with substance abuse in the past, created the organization that offers outpatient counseling to adults in the Minneapolis area.

Treatment and Staff

The intake process begins with an initial phone call followed by a meeting with a counselor to help determine the level of care needed. Clients then meet with either Arland Fanning or one of New Direction’s counselors to chart out an individualized treatment plan. New Directions accepts Medicare, Ucare, Hennepin Health or self-pay. Clients in need of a higher level of care are referred to outside residential or detox facilities.

The outpatient program consists of individual and group therapy. While the program’s duration and intensity vary, most attend one to three groups a week. Counselors use reality-based lectures and motivational speaking to help inspire clients, while also employing a variety of evidence-based practices, such as CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI), in addition to relapse prevention strategies. Individual sessions are scheduled on an as-needed basis. New Directions is not 12-step oriented, however, clients are encouraged to attend outside AA and NA groups while in treatment.

New Directions offers mental health screenings and education for clients with potential co-occurring disorders.

Staff consist of LADCs and CSACs.

Extras

New Directions runs an aftercare program that consists of occasional group and individual therapy. This program focuses on relapse prevention and transitioning into a life outside of treatment. It also refers clients to outside community resources that support their sobriety, such as 12-step groups and sober living homes.

The organization also offers DUI and DWI education classes.

In Summary

New Directions For Change is an affordable outpatient treatment program that uses motivational techniques as well as evidence-based care to encouragement inspiration and self-realization as they progress in their recovery. Its aftercare options allows clients to step-down at a pace that works best for them, while mental health screenings and education are a great resource for clients with a dual diagnosis. For those seeking outpatient treatment for substance abuse in the Greater Minneapolis area, New Directions For Change is a solid choice.
