The Basics
Situated in the Los Angeles suburb of Sherman Oaks in the San Fernando Valley, New Directions Eating Disorder Center is a treatment facility that specializes in the care of clients struggling with eating disorders as well as those with co-occurring mental health disorders. New Directions has been featured on the Dr. Phil Show and offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for the treatment of a range of eating disorders including anorexia, bulimia and compulsive binge-eating. Clients receive a program customized to their specific needs with the goal of treating “the whole person,” including the underlying causes.
Treatment and Staff
New Directions offers IOP geared towards both adolescents and adults. The IOP level of care is perfect for clients either stepping down from residential treatment or those that need treatment but cannot take time out of their life to be away from home for a long-term program. IOP typically lasts 15 weeks at about eight hours a week. Upon admission, clients undergo an assessment for eating disorders and overall mental health in order to help the staff create the most effective individualized treatment program.
The facility offers an integrated approach to treatment that includes evidence-based therapy like CBT as well as health and wellness education and, if needed, psychiatric consultations. Clients engage in small group sessions run by a licensed clinician, with the overall goal to develop coping skills and restore a healthy relationship with eating. Clients participate in group therapy twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 8:30 pm, and a Saturday consultation session with a dietician from 10 am to 12:30 pm. In addition, family involvement is a key component to the success of long-term sustainable recovery. Family is encouraged to participate in therapy where they can better understand the disease as well as enhance their ability to offer support.
The New Directions team is comprised of LCSWs, Master’s-level therapists, counselors, dieticians and a consulting psychiatrist.
Extras
New Directions works with many insurance companies, and the total program cost includes the intake assessment, IOP and a consulting session with a licensed dietician. Additional sessions such as medication management are extra.
