New Beginnings Adolescent Recovery CenterThe Basics

New Beginnings Adolescent Recovery Center in Opelousas, Louisiana, offers a range of services for teens ages 13 to 18 suffering from substance abuse and co-occurring mental health issues. From detox to residential to Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP), this facility views addiction as a disease, using the 12 steps to guide adolescents through treatment. With a staff comprised of physicians, psychologists, LCSWs and licensed addiction counselors, New Beginnings is able to provide extensive support and 24-hour care as clients go through the recovery process.

Accommodations and Food

The 16-bed facility on 20 scenic acres has separate living areas for men and women around a central courtyard. Clients are each given a room and bath to share with one other person. The rooms have a college dorm feel with two twin beds and a living room, complete with couches and a television.

The campus also includes recreational facilities, administrative offices, meeting centers and a dining hall. All meals are prepared by the resident chef and eaten as a group. The food centers around nutrition as the goal of treatment is to restore the client’s body to optimum health. Sandwiches, fruit, salad, pasta, chicken, fish and soup are some of the items that appear on the menu on a regular basis. Special needs and dietary requests can be accommodated.

Treatment and Staff

The 30- to 90-day treatment at New Beginnings is based on the 12 steps and uses a phase system. As clients progress with their therapy and 12-step work, they are allowed to pass onto the next phase. Each new phase increases privileges and confidence as clients meet their treatment goals

On-site medically monitored detox is available. Individual therapy occurs several times a week with the client’s primary therapist. Group therapy makes up a good portion of the daily schedule, with topics including relapse prevention, 12-step work, trauma, family dynamics and processing. Clients may also attend both on- and off-site 12-step meetings.

New Beginnings encourages clients to engage in physical fitness each day as a way of preparing for an active lifestyle once they leave treatment. Supervised gym time and use of the outdoor recreation areas are both part of the daily schedule.

The family program at New Beginnings plays a big role in recovery. Family therapy sessions are held on a weekly basis with the primary therapist, in addition to educational lectures and group therapy for family members and clients. After clients complete the first seven days of treatment, they are eligible for visits. Typically, visitors are limited to family members and must be pre-approved by the client’s treatment team.

Since most of the clients in this facility are still in school when they enter treatment, New Beginnings offers an education program. All classes are held on-site and taught by certified instructors. Credits gained are transferable to the client’s school of origin. The facility also offers a GED program for clients who are over the age of 17.

For clients who still need support after their residential treatment plan has ended, the PHP is a good option. This program is eight hours per day, five days a week, allowing the client to live at home with their family while still receiving intense support. Partial hospitalization costs $300 per day.

Extras

When it comes to recreation, New Beginnings offers lots of outdoor activities including tennis, basketball and volleyball. There’s also a gym equipped with weights and stationary machines that residents can use under supervision.

Once clients reach a certain phase of treatment, off-site outings to the movies, hiking and horseback riding are offered during weekends. For those who stay on campus, extra curricular activities such as the outdoor challenge rope course and a fully stocked art room add some fun to the client’s day.

While many facilities charge additional daily fees for on-site detox, New Beginnings includes it in the monthly cost.

In Summary

With a small staff-to-client ratio, an array of on-site amenities, education and a great family program all at a comparatively affordable price, New Beginnings offers a comprehensive treatment program at an affordable rate. Through the use of the 12 steps and traditional therapeutic ways of healing addiction, adolescents and their family members are able to embrace sobriety with support and understanding.
