NAPD GenesisThe Basics

New Advances for People with Disabilities began in October of 1979 in Bakersfield, California. A nonprofit organization dedicated to providing services to disabled individuals throughout Kern County, founder Walter Cochneuer saw the need for advocacy and assistance for the mentally and physically disabled. From this initial endeavor The Genesis Chemical Dependency Program grew—a program designed specifically to address substance abuse treatment for special populations of individuals with intellectual, developmental and physical disabilities.

Treatment and Staff

The Genesis program is an outpatient substance abuse track modified to accommodate clients with moderate to severe intellectual and physical disabilities. The goal of the program and the clinical staff is to establish trust with the clients to guide them towards recovery and an abstinence-based lifestyle. Depending on the client’s needs and the outcome of their intake assessment, an individualized treatment plan is developed between the client and their case manager.

The Early Intervention program is specific treatment track that offers only individual therapy. The client attends a session once per week working with their counselors through adaptive programming. Length of treatment depends on the needs of the individual and their family. Because all clients have difficulties with mental processes, all therapy performed is visual—clients and counselors utilize whiteboards to hash out causes of chemical abuse and the consequences of prolonged over-use and addiction. Psychoeducational videos are also used to help clients develop a better understanding of addiction. The Early Intervention program is open to the public.

The second outpatient program (reserved for existing NAPD enrollees), is a year-long two phase program designed to help clients build a strong foundation for recovery. The first phase is an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that meets three times per week for individual and group therapy sessions for four months. For the next eight months clients meet weekly for group and individual sessions. Clients can attend programs during the day or in the evening to accommodate their own schedules and family obligations.

All clinical staff members are CADCs with special training in helping disabled populations. Clients are randomly screened for drugs and alcohol to ensure abstinence during their treatment. All sessions are paid for out of pocket since NAPD does not accept insurance for treatment.

Extras

The Genesis program utilizes alternative therapies to assist clients with self-expression and healing during treatment including art and music therapies and adaptive physical education. NAPD also has specialty outreach programs for disabled youth between the ages of 12 and 22 including anger management and an abstinence based sex education program for young people and adults with disabilities.

In Summary

Genesis is a highly specialized program that offers substance abuse treatment for clients facing challenging disabilities made more difficult with the presence of substance abuse. The clinical staff are trained to not only treat addiction but to adjust treatment plans to accommodate clients with special needs using visual representations and creative therapy applications. This is a unique program designed to serve a niche population, making substance abuse treatment accessible to all who need it.
