Nevada Skies Youth Wellness Review

Nevada Skies Youth Wellness Center is a gender-specific residential treatment facility located on the Pyramid Lake Paiute Reservation about 30 miles outside of Reno, Nevada. This facility caters to boys between the ages of 12 and 18 who are of Native American decent. The program includes evidence-based methods like DBT and the 12 steps, in addition to traditional cultural treatment approaches.

Accommodations and Food

The white one-story building where the clients reside during treatment offers 16 beds in fully furnished, double-occupancy bedrooms with full beds, desks and standing wardrobes provided in each room. There are several shared bathrooms throughout the facility. The spacious residence includes classrooms with access to computers medical offices, a dining hall and gymnasium where clients play basketball, volleyball or have group fitness classes. There are also lounge areas with TVs and books for down times between classes or groups.

The nutrition and overall wellness of the boys is a focus while in treatment and the clients are served three meals a day that are prepared on-site. A staff nutritionist who also includes traditional Native cuisine on occasion in the carefully-designed set menus.

Treatment and Staff

Nevada Skies offers a number of treatment methods that include cultural and spiritual modalities. Group and individual therapy sessions are offered several times a week, as well as the White Bison curriculum, which is a Native American organization that was established in 1988, and promotes whole body and mind wellness through education and therapy. Additionally Nevada Skies uses cultural practices like a sweat lodge, traditional dance and smudging in their treatment. Though these options are offered, it is not required that the clients participate in them and the facility doesn’t push any religion or set of spiritual beliefs on any of their clientele.

During their three to four month stay in treatment, the boys become familiar with AA and attend daily on-site meetings.  CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI) are commonly employed therapeutic methods utilized by the staff. In addition, education is emphasized while in treatment and the clients are required to continue their schooling by completing their GED or receive vocational training. For those with co-occurring disorders, there is a nurse available 24 hours a day for medication management services. The other staff members of Nevada Skies are a multi disciplinary team of medical doctors, nurses, and clinical behavioral health counselors.
