Neil Kennedy Recovery Clinic Review
Neil Kennedy Recovery Clinic offers residential rehabilitation at its main campus in Youngstown, Ohio, a small city near the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The town was the subject of Bruce Springsteen’s ballad “Youngstown,” reflecting its economic decline during the collapse of steel manufacturing in the late 1970s. Neil Kennedy Recovery Center, which opened in 1946, was one of the first facilities in the country to treat substance abuse. It continued operating throughout the economic crisis of the 70s and provided treatment to many unemployed people who turned to substances when they lost their jobs.
Accommodations and Food
The main campus is located at the end of a quiet single-lane road and backs up to a wooded area, providing a relatively private, serene environment. It offers 20 beds, all in shared rooms with two residents per room. No private rooms are available. Three meals a day are prepared by the on-site cook, but the food is hardly noteworthy. Staff is quick to emphasize that treatment is all about recovery, meaning residents should not expect posh furniture and down comforters in their rooms or locally-grown, organic fare in the kitchen.
Treatment and Staff
Detox is available on site for a cost of $648 a day; basic inpatient care is $463 a day. Treatment is 12-step based and involves group and individual therapy. Counselors use a variety of treatment modalities adapted to each individual, and yoga is provided on-site by a visiting instructor. Neil Kennedy also offers medication-assisted treatment for opioid dependence to reduce cravings and withdrawal sickness while residents learn skills for sustained recovery. Meetings are part of treatment and are offered on-site.
In November 2014, longtime Executive Director Jerry Carter retired and turned over the reins to Carolyn Givens, formerly at the helm of the Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation and previously the director of the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services. A psychiatrist and medical doctor are on call to assist residents, but are not on-site at all times. Former residents rave about the staff’s knowledge, depth of insight, compassion and humor.
Extras
The facility offers a “Fellowship Hall” that is a resource for residents and the community and hosts 24 12-step meetings weekly.
In Summary
Neil Kennedy Recovery Clinic has had plenty of time to hone their program, which is about nothing more than recovery. Its no-frills treatment gets the job done.
