The Basics
Founded in 1966, Near North Health provides outpatient substance abuse treatment to the Chicago neighborhoods of West Town and Near North. The organization is licensed through the state’s Department of Health Services Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse (DASA) and is equipped to treat adults who struggle with addiction or co-occurring disorders.
Treatment and Staff
All incoming clients undergo an in-depth, in-person assessment prior to starting the program. Near North does not offer detox at this time so clients experiencing withdrawal symptoms must seek assistance elsewhere prior to beginning treatment.
The outpatient program consists of group and individual therapy using evidence-based practices, such as CBT and DBT, in conjunction with group sharing and relapse prevention methods. Groups are gender-specific and primarily focus on substance abuse education. Individual therapy is scheduled as needed. All clients are urine tested regularly while in treatment. The duration and intensity of the program varies as it is based on assessment.
Although Near North is not 12-step based, counselors still recommend clients to attend outside AA/NA meetings and find a sponsor while in the program.
Near North is equipped to treat clients with a dual diagnosis and offers individual, family and couples sessions with a mental health counselor.
The substance abuse staff at Near North are all LCSWs.
Extras
Although it does not have an official aftercare program, case managers work regularly with clients to help prepare them for a smooth transition out of treatment, which may include securing sober housing, employment or enrolling in school.

Near North Health is an affordable treatment program for structured and evidence-based outpatient care. Clients have access to treatment professionals as well as case managers and additional resources for dual diagnosis support. Clients may choose to supplement their program with AA or NA meetings but those who don’t connect to the 12-step approach to recovery will not be required to attend. With an added focus on addiction education and relapse prevention, Near North Health is a valuable resource for locals.
