Operating under the Pathways Community Health Compass Health Network, NAVIG8 provides sliding scale residential treatment in Missouri for adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17. The first inpatient program opened in Clinton in 1992, and two other facilities in Rolla and Columbia were established soon after.

Accommodations and Food

Combining all three buildings, NAVIG8 has a 43-bed capacity. Both the Columbia and Rolla buildings are in residential neighborhoods, while the clinical Clinton facility is in an urban setting. Dorm-style, gender-specific rooms accommodate two residents apiece. Bulletin boards are provided for posting personal photos.

Besides the dorms, each facility has a living room equipped with a TV, radio and comfortable couches, and a dining hall. Three hot meals are served daily cafeteria-style, and snacks are provided. American cuisine is standard, but NAVIG8 does accommodate vegetarian and special needs diets. Coffee is not served.

Each residence also has a recreational room with a ping pong table.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment lasts for 60 days. Detox services are not provided, but if necessary, referrals are made to a local hospital. Face-to-face screening is required prior to admission, and residents work closely with their case managers to develop individualized treatment plans.

Weekly treatment includes daily group therapy, two individual sessions and attendance at 12-step meetings, both on and off the premises. Evidence-based methods including CBT and DBT are used and individual therapy provides dual diagnosis support, as well as psychiatric referrals if needed. Educational groups cover topics such as relapse prevention, anger management, health issues, parenting, communication aptitude, values and life skills.

Residents also meet with a certified teacher two hours a day to continue their educational studies. A visiting registered nurse provides information on nutrition, hygiene and HIV/STD prevention.

Clients advance through eight stages of treatment. Based on performance, participation and behavior, they are graded on a daily and weekly basis. A positive score increases house privileges such as using the phone, watching TV or listening to the radio, as well as off-site passes to visit family. Scoring is totaled weekly. Once a certain score is attained, a resident moves on to the next level of treatment.

Residents who abuse privileges are “grounded.” House phone and other privileges are taken away as they work with counselors to develop “S.M.A.R.T.” (Simple, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely) plans to get them back on track.

There are approximately 23 staff members including eight full-time substance abuse technicians, case managers and licensed substance abuse counselors. The ratio between staff and residents is one-to-two.

Extras

Aftercare is provided to all residents and includes weekly individual therapy and group therapy. NAVIG8 also offers outpatient treatment that is similar to the aftercare protocol. The family program includes group therapy and individual therapy. On Sundays, a family awareness group is provided.

In Summary

For those interested in a program that emphasizes behavior modification over a spiritual approach, NAVIG8 offers financially challenged clients and their families an opportunity to heal from substance abuse and to work on co-occurring disorders.
