Naval Medical Center Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program Review
Based out of San Diego, California, the Naval Medical Center Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program (SARP) provides a number of treatment options for active duty members of the armed forces. Based out of SUBBASE Point Loma, clients attend treatment that includes short-term intervention to Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), as well as month-long residential treatment for addiction.
Accommodations and Food
The Naval Medical Center provides treatment in a clinical, hospital-style setting with a total of 204 beds available. While there are some private rooms, residents usually stay in group rooms with two or more roommates. Clients are given three meals a day while in treatment.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning a program, clients undergo an initial assessment to determine the extent of their substance abuse issues. Those in need of detox can do so on site with medical supervision prior to beginning formal treatment. While each program is individualized, programs consist of group and individual therapy rooted in evidence-based practices, such as CBT. All clients are required to attend 12-step meetings as well as groups with rotating topics that use trauma-informed care and psychoeducation. The program also offers educational workshops and physical fitness activities. Residents attend treatment Monday through Sunday for 34 days.
The staff at Naval Medical Center is extensive and includes MDs, psychiatrists, psychologists, LCSWs, CADCs and additional Master’s-level clinicians.
Extras
In addition to the above, the facility also offers family programs that consist mainly of education on the disease of addiction.
Once clients finish a program, they can receive aftercare via weekly ongoing groups that meet for up to one year after treatment ends.
Standalone mental health services are available for children and adults as is a tobacco cessation program and medical and psychiatric assessments.
In Summary
Overall, the Naval Medical Center Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program is a thorough treatment option with psychiatric and medical backing. Although only available to active duty military, all treatment plans are individualized and include evidence-based care as well as 12-step support. For those who qualify, Naval Medical Center Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program remains a strong choice.
