The Basics
Located in San Diego, California, the Naval Medical Center Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program provides outpatient treatment for active duty members of the armed forces. Based out of SUBBASE Point Loma, programs range in intensity from short-term interventions to Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP).
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning treatment, clients go through an initial assessment or evaluation to determine what program would best suit their needs. The least intensive track is Impact, a two-and-a-half-day option designed to be correctional and preventative. Clients go over the basics of the 12 steps in addition to educational sessions.
For more intensive care, the basic outpatient track lasts for eight days and includes individual and group therapy rooted in evidence-based practices, such as CBT. Sessions focus on psychoeducation, trauma-informed care and responsible drinking plans (at this stage, treatment is based on principles of harm reduction). The IOP lasts for three weeks and features many of the same elements as the basic track albeit more thorough and abstinence-based. It also includes a physical exercise component.
Staff consists of LCSWs, CADCs, psychologists and additional Master’s-level clinicians.
Extras
Additional services include family programs, which focus on educating loved ones about the disease of addiction, aftercare in the form of weekly groups that meet for up to a year after treatment and a tobacco cessation program. Standalone mental health care is available for children and adults. Finally, those in need of more intensive treatment can attend the residential treatment program.
