Van Nuys CaliforniaThe Basics

Providing services for the San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys since the 1970s, The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence of the San Fernando Valley (NCADD-SFV) is committed to providing outpatient prevention, education and referral services to the community regarding substance abuse and alcohol, starting with children and adolescents.

This non-profit organization follows the disease concept of addiction and aims to treat the whole family in an effort to eradicate addiction and facilitate healing for all those affected by the disease. Referral services are provided for a range of services, including detox, residential treatment, hospitals and sober living facilities.

Treatment and Staff

NCADD-SFV services include programs for individuals referred from court, probation, Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), Deferred Entry of Judgment (DEJ), Penal Code 1000 (PC1000), Penal Code 1210 (PC1210), General Relief Groups, Women’s Methamphetamine Groups and co-ed adult groups.

In the DEJ program, eligible clients can be diverted out of the court system and into substance and alcohol abuse treatment by participating in outside self-help/peer support groups. These clients must attend a total of 20 straight weeks of treatment comprised of substance abuse education, self-awareness, health and wellness and relapse prevention. They must attend 18 groups, one intake and one exit interview for program completion.

The Penal Code 1210 is an alternative sentencing program where drug offenders are given the opportunity to seek services for their addiction issues. Participants work through two levels of  treatment. Level one is three-months in duration during which participants attend one weekly group therapy session, one individual therapy session and urinalysis testing (UA). Level two has the same requirements, but lasts for six months and requires individuals to attend at least two weekly groups.

In the General Relief Group, clients are enrolled for a minimum of 12 weeks and assigned a case manager with whom they meet regularly for guidance and supervision as they work towards achieving their goals and objectives for sobriety. The case manager also helps the client create a treatment plan tailored to their needs and places them in a group that is considered most beneficial to their needs.

The Women’s Methamphetamine Group is treatment that deals with gender and drug specific issues. Individuals enrolled in this program must attend a minimum of 12 weeks up to 24 weeks—depending on the client’s unique plan. In addition, participants must attend three groups weekly and two monthly individual sessions. Clients also participate in a variety of services including education, awareness, focus groups, topic discussions and Art Therapy.

In the Adult Program, clients are enrolled for a minimum for 12 weeks depending on the participant’s needs and referring agency. Clients are required to attend two weekly meetings as well as participating in education, awareness, prevention, focus and discussion groups. Additionally, each participant has to attend three self-help or support groups on a weekly basis. A Spanish-speaking Adult Program is also available.

Treatment at NCADD-SFV is 12-step oriented and services are limited to the basic outpatient level and sessions all include discussing relapse prevention techniques. While it does not offer dual diagnosis support, referrals are given upon request.

The staff-to-client ratio is one to 15 and staff mainly consists of CDACs.

Extras

NCADD–SFV also offers drug testing, court referral DUI services and an outreach program.
