Natchaug Hospital Review
Established in 1954, Natchaug Hospital in Mansfield Center, Connecticut offers detox, inpatient and outpatient care, as well as a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Natchaug, a division of a part of Hartford Healthcare, is a nonprofit serving adults and adolescents with treatment for both substance abuse and co-occurring disorders.
Accommodations and Food
The adult treatment facility is a freestanding building that accommodates both men and women for detox and inpatient programs. The detox process lasts three to five days in total and can host 19 clients at a time. During this treatment, all clients are housed together and are overseen 24 hours a day.
After detox is completed, and if a bed is available, clients have the option of moving into the inpatient treatment program, which can fit 21 men and 21 women on separate floors. This program lasts approximately 21 to 28 days, with clients sleeping three to a room with attached private bathrooms. The facility doesn’t offer many amenities or recreational activities such as a gym or exercise area, though clients can read, relax and watch TV during down time. There is a phone on each floor that can be used to call family during designated times.
An on-site cafeteria provides three meals a day to residents, with healthy and filling options always on the menu. While snacks aren’t available, clients are welcome to as many helpings as they’d like during mealtimes.
Treatment and Staff
For those participating in inpatient treatment, the days consist of five or six group therapy sessions and addiction education classes per day starting around 8 am.
PHP clients attend the facility five days a week for about five and a half hours a day; IOP is three days a week for three hours; and outpatient is one to two times a week for one hour at a time. Clients attend group therapy sessions and one individual session per week in the IOP or PHP. Groups are coed and never exceed 10 clients, with one counselor running each session. Relapse prevention and coping skills are covered in the group sessions, as well as education about the disease of addiction. Generally speaking, outpatient occurs during the evening hours and PHP takes place during the day. Therapists use evidence-based methods such as CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and EMDR.
Natchaug Hospital also offers IOP and PHP for young adults ages 18 to 25 and adolescents ages five to 17. These programs provide group and individual therapy for substance abuse as well as co-occurring conditions and require that clients attend a minimum of one outside AA/NA meeting per week. All programs are designed to last six to eight weeks, though many clients continue with treatment beyond that.
Natchaug’s staff includes medical directors, attending psychiatrists, LSWs, MFTs and therapists who specialize in addiction. During detox, RNs oversee clients around the clock.
Extras
The facility offers a family program that can take place either on-site or on an in-home basis, depending on each family’s needs. An aftercare program is developed during the initial intake.
