Based in the peaceful suburban hamlet of Garden City, New York, the Long Island-based Nassau Alternative Counseling Center is an OASAS-licensed facility offering outpatient substance abuse treatment. The program falls under the banner of the Nassau Alternative Advocacy Program, which works with the local courts to assist in finding alternative sentencing for drug and alcohol-related offenses. Despite this strong connection to the court system, not all clients who participate in the Nassau Alternative Counseling Center are court-mandated.

Treatment and Staff

The program at the Nassau Alternative Counseling Center begins with an initial assessment, wherein the individual’s path of treatment is determined. While there are no inpatient detox services, the facility does provide a medically supervised outpatient opiate and alcohol detox program, which typically utilizes Burenorphine treatment. Clients in need of a more comprehensive detox are referred to a local facility, typically the Long Island Center for Recovery in Hampton Bays.

Clients participating in the Nassau Alternative Counseling Center program can expect a weekly mix of group and individual therapy, which is generally 12-step oriented, with the ability to develop an individualized treatment program. The facility offers both gender-specific and co-ed groups, as well as DWI and criminal justice specific sessions, both anger management and relapse prevention tracks.

Nassau Alternative Counseling Center also offers dual diagnosis care, with individual sessions with an on-staff psychiatrist offered to address co-occurring disorders. The facility also employs a consulting psychiatrist and medical doctor as well as social workers, psychologists and CASACs, the latter of which handle the majority of the group sessions at the facility.

Extras

Nassau Alternative Counseling Center offers domestic violence classes, a specific program for adolescents and a family program. There are Spanish and Polish-language sessions offered as well.

As mentioned, the Nassau Alternative Counseling Center is the outpatient arm of the Nassau Alternative Advocacy Program, a major resource for Long Island residents facing drug or alcohol related charges in the court system. A standout feature of the Advocacy program is the Court Intervention Project (CIP) which works with private law firms and assigned counsel panels to offer relevant mental health and addiction assessments to propose alternatives to incarceration for clients.

In Summary

While it may only offer outpatient services, the Nassau Alternative Counseling Center nevertheless boasts an impressive range of options. Clients can individualize their program by incorporating a host of specific treatment tracks and can also expect a dual diagnosis and medical component to their care. Additionally, it may provide comfort to potential clients to note that they’ll be aligning themselves with an organization that works to provide alternatives to incarceration for drug and alcohol related offenses.
