The Basics

Founded in 1971, Narco Freedom is a collection of substance abuse treatment facilities and health services located in the South Bronx area of New York. Initially a community methadone clinic, Narco Freedom expanded to incorporate clinical modalities to treat chemical dependency and provide medical care and social support services. In addition, the program provides treatment for those who have a dual diagnosis. The agency expanded its network of facilities to Brooklyn and Queens in 1996.

Treatment and Staff

Outpatient treatment takes place at the New Beginnings Community Counseling Center and caters to both adolescents and adults, as well as people with co-occurring disorders. Typically, an appointment must be made for intake, but in a crisis situation, clients may be seen without an appointment. During intake, a comprehensive assessment is taken for each client and treatment is directed accordingly.

All patients are assigned to a specific therapist for one-on-one counseling, which takes place once a week, and those with a dual diagnosis who need medication management are assigned a psychiatrist. Individual and group psychotherapy, as well as symptom management and pharmacotherapy, are the main treatment methods. Comprehensive case management is also a part of the program. There are groups that cover specific topics like depression, anger management, parenting skills, and there is also a “play therapy” group. Participation in 12-step groups is highly encouraged. Groups are also offered in both English and Spanish.

Staff members include psychologists, psychiatrists and social workers. Each client has at least two staff members working specifically on his/her case.

Extras

Medical care, including HIV case management and marital and family therapy, are offered. Narco Freedom also runs a Scattered Site Housing Program that offers affordable housing to those with substance abuse history.

Narco Freedom offers complimentary methadone maintenance through programs it sponsors throughout the city, employing a wraparound treatment modality that encourages continual care and aims to keep patients from slipping through the cracks.

In Summary

Narco Freedom is a great drug and outpatient treatment program for those not looking to enroll in anything too intense or too time consuming. This would be an appropriate option for people not in an acute or crisis situation. With various therapeutic options and access to psychiatric treatment, a bilingual English/Spanish-speaking staff and social programs, the center provides comprehensive treatment that serves a broad range of clients.
