My New Beginning Sober LivingThe Basics

Founded in 2008 in Los Angeles, California, by executive director Wendy Rudin, My New Beginning Sober Living offers upscale transitional living for women in recovery from chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders. Rudin, who has been clean and sober for 24 years, believes that women can overcome their addictions and can surmount the obstacles that often go hand in hand with addiction, provided that they receive proper nurturing in an empathetic setting.

Accommodations and Amenities

Located near the intersection of Pico and Robertson Boulevards, My New Beginning is in close proximity to Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Century City and West Los Angeles. Clients have easy access to public transportation. Single and double-occupancy rooms are available and there is space for no more than six women at a time. Rooms include twin beds with headboards, nightstands and closet space. A master suite includes a fireplace and walk-in closet. Amenities include weekly housekeeping services, Wi-Fi, Cable TV, food, unlimited local and long distance calling, and laundry facilities.

Food is supplied, and includes donations from local restaurants. Noah’s Bagels supplies a generous amount of cream cheese and bagels. Gourmet coffee and creamer is on hand. Additionally, clients take turns and prepare meals inside a spacious fully equipped kitchen with stainless steel appliances.

Rules and Regulations

At My New Beginning, clients are accepted at any stage of recovery, on a case-by-case basis. They must pass a drug test prior to admission. A 60-day minimum length of stay is required. Clients receive individualized treatment and recovery protocols. Requirements include attendance at 12-step meetings or other recovery support groups, including Refuge Recovery and SMART Recovery. The required quota of weekly meetings varies per client.

Other requirements include attending a local Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), and maintaining psychiatric, mental health and other recovery protocols. Referrals are provided for local outpatient programs, life coaches, massage, therapists, and other services conducive to recovery. Some clients attend IOP at The Canyon, a nearby high-end drug rehab that provides dual diagnosis support.

For the first two weeks, the curfew is 11 pm seven days a week. After that stretch, the curfew is 11 pm Mondays through Thursdays, and one am on Fridays and Saturdays. Exceptions are made to the curfew rule, which includes being at a 12-step meeting along with fellow housemates. Other requirements include being at the house meeting, participating in morning meditation, and performing daily chores. Random drug testing is conducted to ensure the safety of the entire household.

Besides Rudin, staff includes two house managers. All staff members have certificates as Alcohol and Drug Counselors from UCLA Extension. The senior house manager, who is a former resident, has almost five years of sobriety and is pursuing a degree in psychology.
