The Basics
Multicultural Care Centers has been providing outpatient substance abuse treatment for the last five years. Located in Miami Gardens, Florida, a large suburb 15 miles north of Miami, MCC offers both a standard track and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) to adults and adolescents. Befitting its name, MCC provides culturally-sensitive treatment to the diverse population of Miami Gardens and provides services in English, Spanish, Creole and Russian.
MCC’s mission is to help clients become productive in their lives through recovering from alcohol and drug dependency and co-occurring mental illness. Emphasis is placed on healing the mind, body and spirit and the whole family system.
Treatment and Staff
After an assessment, clients are enrolled in either the standard or IOP track. Standard outpatient clients meet for group therapy once or twice a week and have individual therapy as-needed. IOP clients meet for group sessions three times each week. Adult IOP clients have a weekly one-on-one session and adolescent IOP clients usually have two individual therapy sessions each week. Young people may choose to include their families in one session.
Additionally, MCC has a Pscyho-Social Rehabilitation (PSR) group that meets three times a week to treat clients with co-occurring significant and persistent mental health disorders who may also struggle with substance abuse.
The duration of each track is 12 to 14 weeks, depending on attendance. Groups have a maximum of 15 participants and use CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and solutions-focused therapy. The treatment team is trained to treat co-occurring disorders and is comprised of Master’s-level therapists such as Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHCs). MCC also has two psychiatrists on staff who make bi-weekly visits to clients and prescribe and adjust medication.
While 12-step meeting attendance isn’t a requirement of treatment at MCC, it is strongly suggested. Clinicians are also likely to include participation as a component of most clients’ aftercare plans.
Extras
Family counseling is available for outpatient clients and MCC is also in the process of setting up a family therapy group. MCC offers targeted case-management services to help clients coordinate their care and use the resources available to them to secure stable housing and employment.
