Mulligan HouseThe Basics

Located outside the quaint town of Moorefield West Virginia, which is about two hours west of Washington DC, Mulligan House is a sober living for men. In rather unique set up, founder Gordon Vivace only accepts one client at a time. The home is open only to those who have completed primary care at a drug rehab and require additional support, prior to re-entering society. Mulligan House gets its name from the term “Mulligan” which in a game golf means a do-over or second chance.

Accommodations and Amenities

Mulligan House is a single-family log cabin-style residence settled on 20 acres and surrounded by woods. The cabin is two miles away from the nearest neighbor and sits atop a mountain. Nearby is 10,000 acres of a wooded sanctuary, which is home to a variety of birds from hawks to hummingbirds. At times the scarlet tanager, a bird with bright red plumage is spotted. The preserve has bears, deer and wild turkey. Amenities include a Bowflex for exercise, Wi-Fi and (of course) bird watching.

The interior has a spacious living area, which includes a kitchen, dining room table and chairs, and a family room area with couches and a fireplace. A winding metallic staircase leads to the second floor where there is a loft. A wooden staircase leads to the ground floor, where there is a furnished bedroom, private bathroom and glass doors leading outdoors. The client resides on the ground floor and Vivace also lives onsite.

The fully equipped rustic-style kitchen includes a tiled grey counter with dark wood stools. The client is expected to participate in meal preparation, with the emphasis on making healthy meals. A typical entrée includes grilled shrimp and sautéed spinach with pasta or grilled chicken and veggies, with basmati rice. Dessert includes ice cream with fresh berries.

Rules and Regulations

At Mulligan House, length of stay is between two weeks and two months. Potential clients undergo an interview to ensure that Mulligan House is an appropriate fit. Typically, Vivace accepts clients who have undergone a minimum of 30 days at a drug rehab. Those requiring detox or medical attention must be stable before they begin the interview process.

At Mulligan House, SMART Recovery is utilized during the program. A typical day is unstructured and varies, depending on the client’s needs. Initially, when a client arrives, Vivace give him ample time and space for reflection. After several days, the main focus centers on discovering and discussing the underlying issues which the client experiences.

At Mulligan House, the belief is that alcoholism and drug addiction are symptoms of deeper concerns. Possible issues include codependency, relationships, coping with loss and disease, men’s health and sexuality. Other services include focused meditation, hiking, walking, touch therapy, life skills coaching and pastoral counseling. The program at Mulligan House is funded by donations. The 30-day cost is between $0 and $2,000, depending on the client’s financial situation.

During their stay, if clients require medical or psychiatric attention, or are threats to themselves or to staff, they are immediately removed from the premises. Vivace is a certified SMART Recovery facilitator with training in CBT. He is also a sober companion and pastoral counselor. Additionally, he worked as an Assistant Director of Education at Second Genesis, a residential treatment program.

Extras

While Vivace supports the principles espoused by the fellowships of AA/NA/CA, a 12 step approach is not incorporated at Mulligan House.

In Summary

This sanctuary provides a unique opportunity for a client who seeks some down time, wants a non-12-step approach and needs individual attention. Mulligan House is the perfect setting for a client who seeks to find healing in nature, while having a steady sober companion on hand to provide guidance and support.
