Mountain Lake Academy’s St. Joseph’s Substance Abuse Program is offered by Mountain Lake Academy, a residential therapeutic school for adolescent boys between the ages of 12 and 21. Located in the midst of the Adirondack Mountains in Lake Placid, New York, the campus supports an active and outdoors-oriented lifestyle, which Mountain Lake Academy considers an integral component of recovery. St. Joseph’s Substance Abuse Program is a CARF-accredited adjunct outpatient program with a holistic approach that incorporates a five-phase treatment plan.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment at St. Joseph’s is highly individualized and based on five phases of treatment. After an initial assessment, counselors develop a treatment plan that dictates the specific issues of focus unique to each client’s recovery and which forms of therapy best suit their needs.
Clients typically attend individual therapy once a week and group therapy three times a week. During the course of treatment, clients progress through five stages of recovery: early recovery skills, recovery issues, relapse prevention, continuing care and co-dependency. Advancement through each phase depends on the individual and is subject to change throughout the course of treatment.
The first phase focuses on helping clients to develop life-skills and identifying triggers and problem behaviors, asking the clients to take responsibility for their choices. The second phase encourages the youth to cultivate trust and integrity. During the third phase, clients are challenged to own their choices while focusing on independence and developing a post-treatment plan. The fourth phase leads clients towards consistency and success in applying the skills they have learned, as well as leaning on the relationships of trust they have cultivated during treatment. Finally, the fifth phase is goal oriented, asking the young people to solidify their education or professional goals. Treatment for co-occurring disorders is also made available to clients through their individual sessions. Specialized groups for anger management and recovery management are also offered.
In addition to the outpatient services at Mountain Lake Academy, St. Joseph’s Addiction Treatment and Recovery Centers also offers several other treatment and support programs. Clients can access intensive inpatient treatment, a veteran’s residential program, an adolescent residential program, a family program and supportive housing services.
Additionally, a particularly unique feature of this outpatient program is an invitation to participate in quarterly family retreats. Scheduled on weekends, clients and their families spend an intensive few days participating in treatment activities at Mountainview’s Saranac Lake facility.
Finally, clients may also choose to enroll in the accredited Culinary Arts program. This is ideal for those who wish to continue on to more advanced chef training or professional work in kitchens or catering.
The Mountain Lake St. Joseph’s Substance Abuse Program offers a continuum of care that helps young people integrate into their families and the community using newly developed social and life skills. By working through a five-stage program, clients progress in recovery at their own pace, focusing on the issues that are unique to their recovery needs. With a holistic approach to treatment, treatment aims to focus “on the student achieving intellectual, physical, emotional and social growth.”
