Mount Saint Mary’s Hospital Review

Mount St. Mary’s Hospital was founded in 1907 in Niagara Falls, NY by members of the Catholic church. In 1965, it was reborn on 30 acres in nearby Lewiston as a brand-new hospital with a rehab unit. This inpatient program, which also treats those with dual diagnosis, aims to treat the emotional, physical, environmental and spiritual causes of addiction. Though the hospital has a Catholic background, treatment is available for anyone seeking recovery regardless of religious affiliation (or lack of it), sexual orientation, ethnicity, gender, national orientation, disability, criminal history or HIV/AIDS status.

Accommodations and Food

Mount Saint Mary’s Hospital is a 20-bed unit where clients stay in double-occupancy hospital rooms with single beds. Each resident has his or her own dresser and all of the rooms have individual bathrooms. There is also a common area where residents can interact, play games and relax.

The food in the rehab unit is prepared in the hospital cafeteria and is the same as what’s served throughout Mount Saint Mary’s Hospital. Dietary restrictions can be accommodated for medical reasons (such as diabetes or high blood pressure). Meals are fairly simple, but all have a protein, starch and vegetable dish to ensure they are nutritious and balanced.

Treatment and Staff

Mount Saint Mary’s is designed for people in acute crisis who can benefit from 24-hour medical care, but it is not a detox. They offer individual therapy as well as medication management and psychiatrists and physicians are available for dual diagnosis clients. Rational emotive therapy and CBT are used in gender-specific groups. Methadone maintenance is provided for those needing support while detoxing from heroin. In addition to 12-step meetings held on the ward, pastoral support is available for anyone interested in Christian-specific guidance.

Staff members consist of registered nurses, psychiatrists, social workers, psychologists and LADCs. Each client meets for individual therapy once a week and can see a psychiatrist once a week (or more) if necessary. In the event of a medical or psychiatric emergency, clients have access to the hospital’s many physicians and specialists.

Mount St. Mary’s can accommodate those with physical disabilities or special needs.

In Summary

For those seeking a short-term intensive inpatient treatment program under the supervision of medical professionals, including physicians, psychiatrists and nurses, Mount St. Mary’s is a great spot. Many therapeutic support groups as well as 12-step meetings are offered, giving potential clients multiple treatment avenues to pursue after they leave.
