Moundridge Valley HopeMoundridge Valley Hope Review

Moundridge Valley Hope is owned and operated by the Valley Hope Association, a nonprofit organization that has treatment facilities in seven states throughout the Midwest and Southwest. The facility is located in Moundridge, a small Kansas town whose motto is “See the Stars From Here.”

Accommodations and Food

Moundridge Valley Hope is a newer facility with a nondescript building clad in beige siding and stone. The interior is clean, almost sterile, with matching furnishings. It offers 50 single beds with two or three residents to a room. Though each room does offer dividers for privacy, no private rooms are available.

Food is a carb-heavy buffet served cafeteria style, unless residents make special requests for decidedly unhealthy comfort foods such as pigs in a blanket or pizza. A salad bar is available.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at Moundridge Valley Hope is 12-step based and Milieu therapy-oriented (which places a particular emphasis on the ability of community to promote change in the individual). Consequently, cell phones are not allowed so that residents don’t isolate themselves in their rooms instead of interacting with others. The treatment program further facilitates interaction by scheduling several hours of recreation time each week in which residents can use the ping pong and pool tables, basketball court, horseshoe pit or sand volleyball court. A big-screen television and Wifi are also provided. No weight room or other fitness facilities are available on-site, but residents do use the community swimming pool located in town.

On-site detox is available. While there is dual-diagnosis support, it is limited to diagnoses directly correlated to the addiction. That said, residents meet with a therapist five times a week during their first week and at least two hours per week thereafter, though more time is available if needed. Clients also attend two lectures a day and meet in small and large groups, or addiction-specific groups (e.g., opiate dependence.) AA meetings are off-site at a meeting hall one block from the facility.

All of the staff have at least Bachelor’s degrees and all counselors are licensed to provide addiction treatment. Several staff members also have Master’s degrees in social work, psychology or addiction counseling. Nursing staff is available 24/7 and both a doctor and psychiatrist are on call.

Extras

Moundridge Valley Hope has a chapel and two chaplains available on campus and encourages residents to connect to their Higher Power, though no particular religion or denomination is emphasized. A “non-religious” chapel service is offered for 10 minutes every morning.

In Summary

Moundridge Valley Hope is a basic treatment program whose emphasis on community may be a good fit for some. The flexible payment terms (paying upfront reduces the cost by $4,500) also make it an attractive option.
