The Mooring ProgramsThe Mooring Programs Review

Established in 1975, The Mooring Programs was created as a non-profit organization for men and women struggling from chemical dependency. This treatment facility in Appleton, Wisconsin, about 100 miles north of Milwaukee, focuses on the whole person, instead of just treating addiction as a physical issue. By helping clients to develop life skills, coping mechanisms and self-esteem, treatment can promote comprehensive change. In addition to treating substance abuse, this program also helps to stabilize any co-occurring mental health issues through the use of individual therapy and medication when needed.

Accommodations and Food

The Mooring Programs has 79 beds, with men housed in the Mooring House and women a couple of miles away in Casa Clare, both of which are comfortable and homey. Bedrooms are shared, but Casa Clare also includes four extra bedrooms that can be used by mothers and their children, as well as an outdoor play area. Both homes also feature cozy living rooms with televisions, modern kitchens and dining rooms.

All meals are prepared in-house by residents. On supervised grocery trips, they can shop for ingredients for the upcoming week. Cooking often turns into a group effort, helping clients to bond and learn their way around the kitchen.

There are designated smoking areas outside of the houses. While there is no on-site gym, recreational activities are planned for the group on a weekly basis.

Treatment and Staff

Upon entering treatment, all clients must be over 18 and agree to follow the facilities rules during their stay. Detox is not available on-site, although recommendations for local detox facilities can be made. The treatment plans follow a traditional schedule, including weekly individual therapy, educational groups, recreational therapy, relapse prevention techniques, employment planning, vocational/financial planning, medication monitoring and sobriety maintenance through 12-step meetings and individual aftercare plans. Group topics include anger management, coping skills, communication skills and family issues.

Daily attendance at 12-step meetings is not mandatory, but clients are encouraged to take this path toward sobriety and have access to on- and off-site AA/NA meetings. Family counseling is available. For those clients who wish to work on family dynamics, individual counseling can be arranged.

Extras

After completing the residential program, clients can enter transitional care for a few months during which they are provided with opportunities to work and go to school. While they spend most of their time outside the house, residents still have constant support and check in with an individual counselor on a weekly basis.

Transitional living can be followed by a three-to-12 month program of off-site, gender-specific apartment housing where there is zero tolerance for alcohol and drugs. While this phase of treatment offers clients the most freedom, they are still required to attend one group per week and one individual therapy session.

In Summary

This Midwest, no-frills facility provides traditional treatment and, with a series of step-down programs once residential is completed, clients are well supported for a life of long-term sobriety.
