The Basics
Laurie Levin, a former agent at Creative Artists Agency-turned PsyD opened the Moonview Sanctuary in Santa Monica, California, in 2004. With the inspiration and support of her partner, Gerald Levin, the former CEO of Time Warner, Levin developed the concept for a high-end wellness retreat in the heart of the city. The Moonview Sanctuary offers outpatient care that is client-focused and holistic in nature. The program offerings include treatment plans designed for those struggling with addictions and personal crises or just seeking to restore optimal mental and physical health, with an emphasis on spiritual balance. Moonview caters to high-profile clients in prominent fields and treatment is totally confidential, with sessions carefully scheduled to ensure privacy upon request.
Treatment and Staff
New clients at Moonview start with a complete physical and psychiatric evaluation and a scan known as a quantitative electroencephalogram, which assesses the patient’s brain function. The process is repeated throughout treatment to assess progress. The length of care depends on the individual, but ranges from one week to a whole year. Clients who don’t live in the area are put up at luxury hotels—either Shutters or Casa del Mar in Santa Monica—and provided a 24-hour therapeutic buddy, as well as bodyguards and chauffeurs, if necessary.
Clients can opt for a personalized treatment schedule or one of four structured programs. The Releasing Addictions program is designed for those struggling with chemical dependency, eating disorders, sexual compulsivity and gambling. The Overcoming Personal Crisis program offers support for individuals and families facing life crises like separation or divorce, obsessive-compulsive behaviors, anger, anxiety, stress and major life transitions. The Optimal Performance program is designed for high-profile clients who work in the arts, sports or the corporate world who are striving to perform at a higher level. Finally, the Transformational Wellness program addresses the physical and emotional stress that results from chronic pain and major illness.
The programs typically begin with a 15-day, intensive 9 am to 9 pm private regimen. During the first three days, each client gets about four hours of individual therapy and an hour of neurofeedback a day. Therapeutic methods vary widely and focus on one’s ability to create peace and wellness within themselves without destructive behaviors or the use of drugs or alcohol. Some traditional modalities like CBT and the 12 steps, as well as holistic offerings like art therapy are provided as well. Nutritional counseling is included in every treatment plan, and establishing a relapse prevention plan, learning healthy boundaries and coping skills are also covered as needed.
With the Levins at the helm, there are over 100 additional consulting staff members at Moonview that bring an array of experience and knowledge. These include medical doctors and nurses, Master’s-level addiction therapists and LCDCs, yoga instructors and other holistic practitioners and psychiatrists.
