Bronx New YorkThe Basics

Montefiore Medical Center is the academic medical center and University Hospital for the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City, New York. Since 2008, Montefiore has provided long-term outpatient substance abuse treatment through its New Directions Recovery Center, located in The Bronx. In addition to New Directions, Montefiore operates two methadone clinics nearby.

Montefiore regularly ranks among U.S. New and World Report’s Best Hospitals. Its mission is to “provide coordinated, compassionate and leading-edge care designed to reach people when and where they need it most.”

Treatment and Staff

The first step to enrolling in New Directions is to attend a walk-in intake session, available Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 1 pm. Upon admission to the program, clients receive a treatment plan that includes group and individual therapy at the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or standard outpatient program level of care.

IOP clients attend group therapy three to five times each week and have individual therapy at least once a week. Standard outpatient clients attend group therapy once or twice a week and have individual therapy as-needed. The duration of treatment is progress-based, depending on each client’s attendance and treatment goals, and IOP clients can step down to standard outpatient. Most clients complete their treatment plan in six months to one year.

The treatment team includes Master’s-level therapists, psychiatrists and psychologists. Therapy uses CBT, DBT and Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET). Over 20 therapy groups are available each week, including gender-specific groups for both men and women. Clients are also encouraged to attend peer support meetings, such as AA/NA or SMART Recovery, while in treatment.

Clients with co-occurring disorders have access to the behavioral health team at Montefiore and can receive therapy and medication for their mental health diagnosis. The physicians at New Directions are able to prescribe Suboxone for opiate addiction medication-assisted treatment (MAT). Clients who prefer methadone can receive doses at Montefiore’s nearby methadone clinics.

Extras

New Directions offers nutritional and vocational counseling as well as anger management groups. Family therapy is available if a client’s loved ones wish to participate in the recovery process. Services are also available in Spanish.
