MonteAlminara Addiction Treatment Center Review
The MonteAlminara Addiction Treatment Center in the lovely ocean town of Malaga, Spain, offers co-ed residential and outpatient addiction treatment. MonteAlminara offers an optional 12-step aspect, an IOP and aftercare, all individualized and offered in English and Spanish. Apart from treatment for substance abuse, MonteAlminara also addresses addiction to technology, gambling and sex.
Accommodations and Food
MonteAlminara is a luxurious compound, nestled in the mountains above the sea, about six miles from the beach. It has a total of 24 beds clients in 18 spacious single and double rooms, six of which are wheelchair accessible. The MonteAlminara facility has a communal fireplace, dining room, a gym and game room, swimming pool and a large terrace with ocean and mountain views. All meals are included in the price of lodging, and clients get designated meal, nap and pool times.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment at MonteAlminara is bicultural and bilingual, with all classes and group sessions are available in English and Spanish. Length of stay depends on the needs of each client and may range from two weeks to 30 days or longer. Clients also have the option of exiting treatment at any time before their assigned time is over, by signing out “against medical advice.” Each client has four hours of group or workshops and an hour-long individual session, each day. Therapy is CBT-based and incorporates the principles of the 12-steps. They also get assigned homework and are required to take part in physical activities daily. Consultations with a physician are also available as are monitored off-site activities.
Upon completion of the residential program, clients have the option to transition into outpatient care. The MonteAlminara Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is three weeks long and runs from nine am to six pm. Clients attend three to five times per week, along with group, individual and workshop time. Pricing for the IOP is determined by client’s need and individualized schedule. Clients who progress well may step down into basic outpatient treatment with less frequent visits. Outpatient services are offered from the MonteAlminara outpatient clinic in downtown Malaga.
MonteAlminara employs a medical addiction specialist, two psychologists, a psychiatrist, a therapist and nurses. The English-speaking program is headed by Matthew Powell, who is from the US and trained at the Hazelden Graduate School of Addictions Studies at Hazelden Betty Ford in Center City, Minnesota. Powell specializes in the Minnesota Model.
Extras
MonteAlminara provides family therapy on Saturdays.
MonteAlminara aftercare works as a halfway house. Clients can be referred to a structured housing environment and take part in weekly group and individual sessions for the first year following treatment at either the MonteAlminara Treatment Center near Moclinejo or the outpatient clinic. No AA/NA meetings are offered on-site but clients have the option to seek them out on their own and are especially recommended to do so for their aftercare.

On its sixth year of operation, MonteAlminara has been around long enough to get some accolades and good testimonials. But even without those, the spectrum of its services is broad and offered at an economical enough price that really the seminal question for those in the US considering MonteAlminara is whether they feel like taking a transatlantic trip for their treatment.
