Monte Nido Malibu Review
With locations throughout the country, Monte Nido is an expansive behavioral health organization specializing in the treatment of eating disorders and related health issues. The company was founded in 1996 and provides a range of flexible treatment options for adult and adolescent men and women. The flagship facility in Malibu, California offers residential treatment plans with flexible lengths of stay.
Accommodations and Food
Situated on two acres in the wooded hills, the Monte Nido facility is a secluded cabin with room for six women. The home is surrounded by a state park and has scenic views of the ocean as well. Residents stay two to a room with twin beds, cushy comforters, bedside tables, carpeted floors and small desks. Each room also comes equipped with its own private bathroom and a deck overlooking the ocean. The facility also has spacious living room areas with cable TV, outdoor areas with seating, an on-site gym, therapy rooms and an expansive kitchen. Throughout their stay, clients are served three meals a day by a team of on staff chefs and nutritionists. As they proceed through the program, residents also learn how to cook and prepare meals as part of their treatment.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning treatment, all participants go through an initial intake and assessment process to help the staff develop their individualized treatment plans. While detox services are not available on-site, those in need can get referrals to nearby programs. Though the specifics of each plan may vary, all clients attend full days with individual and group therapy rooted in evidence-based practices including CBT, DBT and Psychodynamic and Interpersonal Therapy. Dual diagnosis support is also available including medication management for those struggling with addiction issues, trauma or other behavioral health problems. While 12-step participation is not required, support is available for both AA/NA/OA and SMART Recovery. Group sessions cover healthy body image, relapse prevention, feminist topics and family therapy.
The staff at Monte Nido consists of psychiatrists, LCSWs, Certified Eating Disorder Specialists (CEDS), RNs, LMFTs and additional Master’s and PhD-level counselors.
Extras
In addition to the clinical practices, each plan also includes holistic and alternative therapies including art therapy, music therapy, psychodrama, nutritional counseling, exercise classes and yoga.
Clients are taken on off-site trips including to restaurants and public recreational areas. Other special topics covered in groups may include jewelry making, dance classes, naturopathic medicine and equine therapy.
Those who finish primary care at Monte Nido can also continue on to one of its Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) as a form of aftercare.
