Moffitt Wellness Retreat opened in 2013 near the resort district of Puerto Vallarta in Jalisco, Mexico. The facility offers a luxury boutique substance abuse treatment retreat experience at a popular tourist destination. Founder Roy Moffitt was inspired to transform his vacation home into a rehab center after attending an AA convention in Puerto Vallarta and subsequently turning his life around. Moffitt’s mission is to provide individualized care for people who need a getaway from their lives in order to begin recovery. Moffitt Wellness Retreat provides treatment to clients who are 18 years and older. Intervention, detox, residential and aftercare planning are available with an emphasis on diet and nutrition, a strong 12-step component and dual diagnosis care.
Accommodations and Food
Moffitt Wellness Retreat’s residential facility is called Casa Patricia. It is an 8,000 square foot, four-level villa with every luxury a high-end resort would offer. This includes maid and laundry service and on-site spa services as well as a personalized recovery coach for each client. An intimate group of just five residents are housed in private rooms with a queen or king beds, big screen TVs and en suite bathrooms, some with Jacuzzi tubs. The home also features a beautiful communal outdoor space overlooking the ocean with smoking areas, a pool and a gym.
All meals are prepared by an on-site chef and the menu is designed by a nutritionist. There are plenty of dietary options available for each meal and vegetarians can be accommodated.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment at Moffitt Wellness Retreat is completely individualized, but the two main treatment tracks are 15 or 30 days. If necessary, a three-day medical detox program is offered off-site at a local hospital that has a cooperative relationship with Moffitt Wellness Retreat. Moffitt does not recommend the ongoing use of Suboxone, Methadone or Naltrexone after detox. If medication is absolutely needed, there is on-site medical staff available at Casa Patricia. Alternately, clients can opt for a completely natural detox. This process takes place on site, where new clients are assessed by a physician and monitored by an in-house nurse. This drug-free process may take between three and seven days, or more depending upon the individual.
Upon admission, clients spend every day attending individual therapy with an assigned counselor and taking part in group therapy twice a day. Weekly schedules include time for psychotherapy and written assignments, off-site adventure excursions and a daily swim or work out. Treatment uses CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI), the 12-step framework and experiential modalities such as art therapy and meditation. Clients are offered transportation to AA/NA meetings at least once a week. Support for co-occurring disorders is available in the form of specialized groups and medication management.
Moffitt Wellness Retreat employs a number of licensed counselors and also works with consulting psychiatrists and psychologists and medical professionals.
Extras
In addition to a weekly therapeutic massage, bodywork options include reflexology, acupuncture, Tai Chi, aqua aerobics. Weekly excursions include snorkeling, whale watching, swimming with dolphins, sport fishing, zip-lining, hiking, biking, exploring local beaches.
Moffitt Wellness Retreat aftercare includes offering referrals and making sure recovery will continue at home.
