Mile High Behavioral Healthcare (MHBHC) is an expansive behavioral health organization that has served over 250,000 clients since it’s founding in 1960. Located in Denver, Colorado, the facility offers outpatient substance abuse treatment to women only.

Treatment and Staff

After an initial phone assessment,  clients meet with counselors to develop and individualized treatment plan. Though detox is not available on-site, those in need are given referrals to an outside agency before beginning treatment.

The main track is an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that typically lasts nine months to a year and consists of group and individual therapy. Sessions run from 9 am to 5 pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays with group sizes ranging from eight to 22 clients. Following the Matrix Model, treatment employs evidence-based practices such as CBT and Seeking Safety. Groups address relapse prevention, life skills and other related topics. Although 12-step participation is not a requirement of treatment, clients are encouraged to attend outside AA and NA meetings if they wish. For clients with a dual diagnosis, additional individual therapy appointments can be added as needed.

After the first three months, clients transition from attending treatment three days a week to two days a week; and after six months, they drop down to only one day a week. Once IOP is completed, clients may step-down to a standard outpatient program, which is fewer hours and shorter in duration.

Staff consists of Licensed Addiction Counselors (LACs), Certified Addiction Counselors (CACs), Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHCs) and peer recovery coaches.

Extras

In addition to traditional treatment, MHBHC offers holistic options such as yoga and acupuncture. There are multi-family groups that brings together two to seven families, as well as clients and counselors. These meetings address family-related issues and aim to establish healthy communication within the family system. There are also parenting groups for clients with children.

MHBHC also offers outreach programs for adolescents as well as ones designed to meet the needs of the LGBTQ community, which include AIDS/HIV support groups. There are DUI programs available as well.

Sober living arrangements are available at one of eight studio apartments for clients in the IOP who are in need of housing. The apartments are overseen by an on-site case manager and clients must have at least two full weeks of sobriety to qualify. Additionally, clients must attend group and individual meetings five days a week as well as outside 12-step groups. Apartments come equipped with a bed, kitchen and living area. Food is not included, so those in need must apply for food stamps.

Although there is no official aftercare program MHBHC, clients who have completed the IOP and the standard outpatient programs are encouraged to come back and talk with counselors when they need to.

Summary

In all, Mile High Behavioral Healthcare offers women individualized and intensive outpatient treatment. With a focus on self-empowerment and healthy families, clients start their journey of recovery within the safety of a highly structured program designed to gradually transition them to an independent and sober life. With evidenced-based practices, holistic care, multi-family groups and parenting classes, clients build a solid foundation for long term sobriety and establish a support system to greet them when they complete treatment.
