Midwestern Connecticut Council of Alcoholism (MCCA)The Basics

The Midwestern Connecticut Council of Alcoholism (MCCA) was founded in 1974 in Danbury, Connecticut. The CARF accredited organization operates substance abuse treatment centers in Danbury, New Milford, Waterford, Derby, Torrington and New Haven. MCCA offers outpatient treatment and transitional housing to adult men and women.

Treatment and Staff

Clients interested in MCCA begin their intake process with a phone screening with one of MCCA’s intake coordinators to help determine if they would be a proper fit for MCCA’s programs. Potential clients meet with a counselor for an in-person evaluation to help determine their level of care and design a potential treatment plan. The organization usually does not have a waiting list and clients are able to begin treatment as soon as they finish the evaluation process. Clients who are undergoing withdrawal symptoms or who are in need of a higher level of care are referred to outside residential and detox programs.

MCCA offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that consists of group and individual sessions. Although the exact length and intensity of the IOP is dependent on the client’s level of need, clients usually attend group meetings at least three days a week.

The group meetings are all three and a half hours long. The first half of the meeting is focused on education and the second on therapy. Counselors at MCAA use a variety of treatment techniques in group meetings including teaching coping skills, life skills, the 12 steps, the stages of change model, relapse prevention as well as anger and stress management. MCCA counselors also focus on teaching clients the effects of drugs and alcohol on their bodies and minds. Gender-specific groups are also offered in the IOP. During the IOP clients are assigned to a specific counselor that they check in with regularly and who helps track their progress. Separate individual sessions are also available based on the needs of the client.

MCCA is dual diagnosis and offers groups specifically for clients with co-occurring disorders.

The counselors at MCCA consist of a mixture of LCSWs, MSWs, LPCs LADCs and LMFTs.

Extras

MCCA also operates two transitional facilities as well as a therapeutic home. The Sunrise Terrace is a 16-bed transitional housing facility for residents who are currently in a treatment program for either substance abuse or co-occurring issues. Each resident shares a bed with another resident. This program lasts for 12 months and residents are required to pay rent each month. Case management assistance is offered for each client for their legal, educational, vocational, psychiatric and medical needs.

The Sobering Center is a short-term social setting detox program for homeless, co-occurring and chemically dependent designed to help prepare clients for treatment. Incoming residents must be medically and mentally stable to enter. The Sobering Center operates number of group meetings based around motivational counseling and teaching life skills. Residents in this program are strongly encouraged to attend outside AA and NA meetings while in the program. Case management services are also offered in the Sobering House with regards to medical and psychiatric needs.

New Dawn is a home-style facility located in a residential area in Danbury designed to treat up to five adolescent teenage girls with mental health issues. The counseling in this program is based on trauma informed care and building up the clients’ self-esteem. All residents in this program are required to attend school while in treatment.

MCCA also offers individual family sessions with the client, counselor and their family members. Clients must initially request these meetings before the counselor can go ahead with scheduling them.

The organization does not have an official aftercare program, but clients are allowed to step down gradually from the program. When leaving MCAA, most clients initially step down to attending group meetings once a week and then to once every other week.

MCCA also offers a women’s residential treatment program.
