The Basics

Based out of Flandreau, South Dakota about 45 minutes north of Sioux Falls, Midwest Speciality Clinics is a behavioral health organization that provides outpatient-based counseling and Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) to men and women struggling with opioid addiction. The organization is designed to serve an under-represented area and operates with the assistance of government funds authorized from the Drug Addiction Treatment Act and Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act of 2016.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning a program, all clients go through an initial intake and assessment process that helps the staff members determine their needs and treatment history. Because the organization is not an inpatient facility, those in need of detox services may need to seek them elsewhere beforehand. Still, those who are stable enough to attend can receive MAT services, which are akin to an ambulatory detox program.

In addition to the medication, participants must also attend group and individual therapy with evidence-based treatment practices including CBT and DBT, though the specifics may vary by program. In addition to counseling, clients attend groups focused on relapse prevention, trigger identification, life skills, healthy communication and more. Participants are also required to attend regular 12-step meetings throughout the program as well. Although dual diagnosis support is not available, those in need can get referrals to nearby programs whenever necessary.

The staff at Midwest Speciality Clinics consists of state-certified drug and alcohol counselors, nurses, medical techs, supervising physicians and additional Master’s-level professionals.

Extras

As the program is provided in part through state funding, both self-referred and court-ordered clients are welcome to attend. The organization also offers standalone assessments, drug testing services, genetic tests and psychiatric tests. Finally, there are specialized options for teens and young adults as well as after-rehab groups for those who complete a primary care program. Staff members can also help with discharge planning and more comprehensive aftercare options whenever necessary as well.

In Summary

In all, Midwest Speciality Clinics is a relatively basic organization with flexible care plans for anyone in the area suffering with a relatively severe opioid addiction. All programs are flexible and individualized with 12-step support and evidence-based counseling available as well. Although clients in need of more intensive medical supervision or dual diagnosis support may need to get additional help elsewhere, Midwest Speciality Clinics remains a strong resource for those who fit the criteria.
