Midway Recovery Systems Review
Located in Griffin, Georgia, Midway Recovery Systems provides 90-day residential substance abuse treatment for men. The facility goes back to the early 1980s, when a group of businessmen in Griffin saw the devastation wrought by substance abuse among young men and decided to do something about it. In 1982, Midway Recovery Systems opened with the fundamental principle that living in a recovery-focused environment is critical to lasting sobriety. From the outset, Midway’s founders were also intent on addressing what seemed like a prevalence of dual problems of alcohol and drug addiction in this small Georgia community just south of Atlanta where relatively few resources were available. In a peaceful country setting, Midway has so far treated more than 1,200 individuals with a range of therapies and dual diagnosis support built on a 12-step foundation.
Accommodations and Food
The atmosphere at Midway is comfortable and homey and conducive to honesty and openness. Two residents share generously-sized rooms with twin beds, desk and dressers. The facility has a common living area with a TV. For treatment sessions and meals, clients walk across the grounds to the main building, which contains therapy rooms, offices and a dining hall. Smoking is permitted in designated areas on the property.
Three meals a day are served in addition to snacks and coffee at various times of the day. Special dietary requests can usually be accommodated.
The well-landscaped property offers plenty of opportunities for recreation, including basketball, volleyball and horseshoes.
Treatment and Staff
Midway does not offer detox and stabilization is recommended prior to arrival. Treatment consists of weekly individual therapy (with the same primary therapist) and daily group sessions that address subjects such as anger management, employment, self-esteem, spirituality, trauma and relapse prevention through a male lens. Clients are exposed to the 12 steps through weekly on-site AA/NA meetings, in addition to discussions about the program.
When treatment is completed, clients have the option of stepping down into Midway’s halfway house for six months of recovery in a structured environment. During this period, clients are required to have a job or attend school as well as help prepare meals. Group therapy and 12-step meetings are also part of this phase of treatment. The cost for this program is $80 per week. After residential treatment, clients may continue in Midway’s “Extended Care House” for 18 additional months of clean and sober living.
The Midway staff includes licensed/certified counselors and social workers.
