The Basics

Recovering addict Dan Keane and his family founded Middle River Sober Living in 1997. Promoting the 12-step-based tradition of helping fellow addicts and alcoholics, Middle River operates three branches in Toms River, New Jersey, Asheville, North Carolina and Pompano Beach, just north of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The Florida location is a converted apartment complex, conveniently located close to an old AA clubhouse, which was built in 1949.

Accommodations and Amenities

Middle River in East Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is comprised of two buildings that have open staircases and a landscaped patio with palm trees. Each gender-specific building accommodates 15 men and 15 women, with four individuals sharing a two-bedroom apartment. The apartments include a living room, dining room, kitchen and bathroom. All apartments have Wi-Fi, cable and there are coin-operated washers and dryers on the premises. The complex is close to public transportation, providing residents with access to meetings, shopping malls and the beach. While rent is charged on a weekly basis, the 30-day cost is $680, not including a $340 security deposit. Move in cost is $680, which is the security deposit plus two weeks rent.

Middle River Asheville, in North Carolina, has sober living houses for both men and women. Previously, there was just a men’s house, but recently, they acquired another house for up to 15 women. The men’s house accommodates between 12 and 15 men. It is a seven-bedroom quaint Colonial style house located in a suburban, quiet neighborhood. In both houses, residents share rooms that are simply furnished with beds, dressers and closets. Wi-Fi, Cable and laundry facilities are available on the premises. The houses are within walking distance of public transportation. The cost for each is $680 per month.

Middle River North in New Jersey operates two male-only sober living houses. Residents reside in a six-bedroom or four-bedroom house. Clients share rooms, and amenities are similar to those in the other Middle River sober living houses. The houses accommodate a combined total of 20 clients in New Jersey. Both homes are in a nice residential neighborhood near each other about 12 miles from Seaside Heights and within walking distance of public transportation. The cost is $700 a month.

Residents in all houses purchase their own groceries, cook their own food and clean up after themselves, thus teaching them responsibility and rudimentary life skills. Middle River supplies newcomers with linens, towels, pillows and basic hygiene items. House managers reside on-site in all the houses, providing support and supervision.

Rules and Regulations

There is no mandated duration for living at Middle River, however residents typically opt for a lengthy stay—between one and two years. Upon arrival, clients meet with staff to discuss their long-term and short-term objectives and set achievable goals. During their stay, they meet with staff on a monthly basis and their progress is reviewed. Curfew is 10 pm the first week. Between the second and fourth week, the curfew is at 11 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. After the fourth week, the curfew is midnight Sundays through Thursdays, and one am on Fridays and Saturdays. Residents can’t sleep in past 10:30 am unless they worked a late shift the night before.

Residents must secure gainful employment, attend at least three 12-step meetings a week and get sponsors. It is also suggested that they participate in outpatient treatment. Those in Florida attend the local Atlantic Recovery Center (also owned by Keane). This outpatient program includes three weekly group sessions, Mondays, Wednesday, Thursdays, from 6 to 9 pm. Transportation is provided for house residents. Clients typically attend individual therapy once per week, and a staff doctor provides medication management to those requiring dual diagnosis support. The outpatient program typically lasts between six and eight weeks, followed by aftercare which is one weekly group session, and individual therapy is scheduled per client’s needs.

Clients who live in the other locations are given referrals to local outpatient treatment programs. While attending an outpatient program is not required among residents, it is highly recommended, with the concept that evidence-based treatment and a 12-step approach offer clients the best shot at building a strong foundation for long-term abstinence from drugs and alcohol.
