The Basics

Established in 1974, Middle Peninsula-Northern Neck Community Services offers services for substance abuse treatment, prevention and early intervention. This coastal Virginia organization has two locations in Gloucester and Warsaw for outpatient chemical dependency treatment. Rooted in the 12 steps, the programs offer three phases of structured care—standard outpatient, Intensive Outpatient (IOP) and aftercare.

Treatment and Staff

Middle Peninsula-Northern Neck Community Services treats substance abuse on an outpatient basis, with preference in admission going to pregnant women and intravenous drug users. Detox is not available, but referrals can be made if needed.

The eight-week IOP program meets three times a week, for three-hour sessions. Treatment involves group therapy and an hour of individual therapy each week. Group sizes are kept small, averaging about 10 to 12 clients. The CBT and DBT-based groups discuss topics including relapse prevention, early recovery, coping skills, meditation, introduction to the 12 steps and anger management. Individual therapy provides dual diagnosis support and also focuses on managing stress and grief.

In addition to therapeutic support, the 12 steps play a big role in the recovery process. The steps are discussed during group and clients are also required to attend a minimum of two AA/NA meetings per week on their own time. Recommendations to local meetings can be made upon request.

Once clients have completed IOP, they can step down to the outpatient track. This eight-week program meets twice a week, for thee hours at a time. Clients continue their weekly individual session, in addition to group therapy.

The staff includes certified addiction counselors and LCSWs.

Extras

The aftercare program assists individuals who are transitioning from the treatment program with developing community support for continuing sobriety. Through identifying recovery risks that may lead to relapse, aftercare helps individuals prepare to deal with life’s challenges. Aftercare programs meet weekly for 16 weeks and participants are also expected to attend 20 meetings of AA or NA.
