The Basics
Located in the eastern Pennsylvania city of Bethlehem, Mid Atlantic Rehabilitation Services (MARS) is a substance abuse treatment center that offers two levels of care, Intensive Outpatient (IOP) and Traditional Outpatient (OPT), and dual diagnosis support. MARS works to include referral sources (such as physicians or courts), employers, family members and others involved with the care of a client in the treatment process. They believe the integration and collaboration of treatment providers is essential to helping clients get the best care. Thanks to a well-rounded, individualized approach to recovery, the unique needs of every person can be met.
Treatment and Staff
At MARS, those seeking treatment are placed in the program that meets their needs, abilities and preferences. The first step in the treatment process is to schedule an initial comprehensive assessment, which determines the level and course of treatment necessary. Detox is not available, but referrals can be provided.
The IOP program meets three times a week, for two-hour sessions. The program mainly uses group therapy, as well as one hour of individual therapy per week. Group topics include relapse prevention, trauma, anger management and life skills. Groups are usually between eight to 10 clients, keeping things small and intimate. Individual sessions give clients a chance to receive one-on-one attention. In addition to treating substance abuse, co-occurring disorders such as depression and anxiety can be addressed. CBT and DBT are used in both the group and individual settings.
The OPT program offers less rigorous support, meeting once a week. Clients are still able to receive an hour of individual therapy, as well as group therapy. The topics are similar to those in IOP, although there is a greater focus on relapse prevention. The length of time spent in this program depends on the individual.
The 12 steps are an important component of recovery. Clients participate in discussions about the application of the steps during group, in addition to receiving lectures that explain the Big Book. Clients are required to attend AA/NA meetings during their free time and encouraged to get a sponsor.
The staff includes several registered nurses and certified substance abuse counselors (CSACs).

MARS offers an optional multi-family group every Saturday.
