Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center ROVERMichael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center: ROVER Review

Located in Houston, Texas, the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center is a multi-faceted facility owned and operated by the US Department of Veterans Affairs, which provides affordable healthcare programs to veterans. In addition to its primary medical care, the organization also offers a specialized residential treatment program called ROVER. It’s designed for male veterans diagnosed with co-occurring disorders.

Accommodations and Food

The facility has 357 acute care beds which can be put to flexible use as needed. The actual hospital is also located on the 188-acre campus. The accommodations are fairly clinical with bedrooms shared between two to three residents, each with twin beds, dressers and shared closet space. The residence also features meeting rooms, shared common areas with TVs, computer work stations and an on-site gym. Throughout their stay, residents are served three meals a day cafeteria style.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning a program, all individuals go through an initial intake and assessment to help the staff determine their needs. The ROVER program is typically four weeks. Days are fairly structured and include both individual and group therapy rooted in evidence-based practices including CBT, DBT and trauma-informed care. Group sessions cover a range of topics which may include anger management, relapse prevention, Seeking Safety, emotional processing, case management and 12-step recovery concepts. Though attending AA/NA meetings is not required, it is strongly encouraged.  Dual diagnosis support that includes medication management is also offered.

The staff at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center’s ROVER program consists of psychiatrists, psychologists, chaplains, RNs, LCSWs, dietitians and additional Master’s-level counselors.

Extras

Holistic groups, including rotating recreational therapy and yoga classes, are worked into the treatment schedule.

Residents are allowed some downtime where they can play video games or watch TV. Clients can use the facility’s computers on the weekends at the staff’s discretion and under their observation.

Those in need of aftercare can work with the staff members to find flexible, stepped down outpatient programs for when primary care is completed.

In Summary

The Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center’s ROVER program is an intensive and comprehensive treatment plan for low-income veterans. Treatment includes evidence-based care, 12-step integration and dual diagnosis support along with some holistic offerings. For those in the area who fit the demographic, the ROVER program could be a great resource for recovery from addiction and co-occurring disorders.
